Teachers' maternity in academies

Hi,

I work in a new academy which doesn't subscribe to the burgundy book.

Does anyone know whether academies paying statutory pay only have to give you full pay during the holidays? Or do you accrue holidays, like you would in any other job?

Thanks in advance,

Sarah

Why would they have to give full pay during holidays? I thought it was a straight switch (e.g. if you started your maternity on the 25th Aug, for example, your pay would switch overnight from normal holiday pay to maternity pay) for the duration of the maternity?

im on maternity pay from an academy although we do still follow the burgundy book.

You should be able to get a copy of your maternity policy which will explain what your pay will be.

As far as im aware teachers can't acrue holiday, academy or not. Your maternity pay would just start and effectivly cancel out any holidays during that time.

I'm a teacher in Scotland so it's a little different but we can accrue some of the holidays. A lot of teachers use this to go back part time to start with. Not sure exactly how it works yet.

I'm very surprised. I have worked in two academies and both had maternity pay policies which pretty much mirrored the burgundy book. What exactly is the wording of the policy?
AFAIK holidays are treated the same as term time in terms of pay. You will not accrue leave. After a European ruling a few years ago teachers are entitled to 28 days of statutory annual leave but depending on your school's leave year (either the academic or the calendar year) then the chance are that you will receive this in a school holiday before or after your mat leave. Hope this makes sense. You might also find experiences if you post in the 'staff room' board.
