Hello, I have got my first midwife visit booked for next Wednesday. Does this really take up to 2 hours? Just had nearly 2 weeks off work. They don't know and don't really want to mess them around so need to have some idea of how long. I know it is important but need to have appropriate excuse. Have made up appointment at doctors but that would only take so long.
Really relieved I am feeling better, had a bad urine infection followed by antibiotics that gave me constant nausea! Can eat again!

About 1hr-1hr 30mins ime. Factor in waiting around and you are looking at 2hrs.

Congratulations Grin.
Your booking in appointment can be a couple of hours, especially if you have questions or you and your family have any medical conditions that need talking about. You'll have huge amounts of information (and leaflets) thrown at you, and it is best not to rush it.

Mine took under an hour. It really depends on your medical history and well being. The mw has a list of questions to ask on your health and social situation, as well as the other things like taking blood, urine sample, BMI check etc. I imagine there will be people who suffer with various ailments and/or are in a difficult social position where they would take the full time but I thankfully was able to answer 'no' or 'not applicable' to the vast majorit of questions so it didn't take as long.

I've just booked mine and they told me it's up to 45 minutes.

Thank you for the replies. I really want to wait a bit longer till I tell work unless I absolutlely have to. Had a bit of a shuffle up there and know something might hit the fan when I tell them! I am first (I presume at 9 so hopefully no hold ups. I know the midwife said to have a good read through Down's screening leaflet and I have the massive pack from the doctors. Also been told to take urine sample too so seem quite organised. Is this something you usually go to alone?

The midwife came to our house and it was recommended for DH to be there so he could answer any questions about the medical history for his family. Plus he was able to ask some questions too. But it definitely isn't essential.

My first booking in appointment took about an hour and second one took closer to two hours, but I had the same MW as before so we were chatting a lot too.

Yours could be a lot quicker if you, your DH and both your families don't have a lot of medical history, but the MW has got a lot to go through

Heatherbell1978 · 04/07/2014 20:10

My DH came with me and I'd recommend that if he can. You'll get a lot of information which is good for him to hear too. He also came to my 12 and 20 wk scans and came to a mw appt I had 2 wks ago as he happened to be off but I've done most of the routine apps alone.

Noodledoodledoo · 04/07/2014 22:52

I went to my booking in alone. Apart from going in late the actual appointment was about 30 min no longer. Was booked in for scans, paperwork filled out, refered to consultant and all the other checks done - urine, weight, blood pressure, etc.

I had a few questions and a chaotically disorganised Midwife, no idea how we would have made it to an hour!

bakingmad83 · 05/07/2014 07:05

Mine was just half an hour too, but I had already had to complete all the medical info about myself, my partner and our families before the appointment, so it was just a case of reviewing that and doing the checks. The midwife didn't really discuss any info with me at the appointment, just gave me a lot of leaflets to take away to read.

SouthDerbyshireMamma · 05/07/2014 07:39

Mine lasted about half hour. I have a pretty straight forward medical history, as does my partner. She did all the checks and tests and I left knowing my scan date and time. Very efficient :-)

Showy · 05/07/2014 07:44

Oh my medical history is dull and straightforward. The chatting, tea and biscuits took aaaaaages. My mw was lovely.

JennyBlueWren · 05/07/2014 08:53

Mine was about half an hour and was all paperwork and a questionnaire. Have another appointment next week (week 10) for the tests.
