Can anyone talk to me about bedside cots?

I went on a visit to the local birthing centre, and they are now trialling using babybay bedside cots instead of the usual see through plastic ones. Ive done a little googling about the different sorts available, and was wondering if anyone had used one, and if they found it a good investment? They seem quite pricey!

I have always used my normal cot/cot bed against the bed with one side removed... Works ok!

If I had the funds (or if these things were available before) I may have considered it, as with my arrangement it is slightly challenging getting out the bed!

Xcountry · 04/07/2014 08:43

We used this one because with DS1 and DD1 I was on my own - DH was away all week and only home at weekends so it was easier for me to feed. Yes it came with the awful yellow bumpers but we didn't use them, we had our own.

It was a john lewis one and MiL bought it for me. I don't know if they sell this exact one anymore but they still sell one similar and it was a godsend for me being on my own. DS1 got really too big for it really quick though (no surprise since daddy is 6ft6) and I had to put him in full size cot bed which was a pain in the arse for BFing.

I had an arms reach co sleeper and found it really good to help settle dd and loved having her so close to me. However it didn't help her sleep as much as actually having her in our bed, but felt much safer and we got to keep our duvet and roll over etc which we couldn't do when she was in with us.

It was expensive but we got the co sleeper mini ( bit smaller, lasts until 5 months ) from an Irish company, it folded up so we used it as a travel cot too.

I liked it and would use it again, but I know others who breast fed for longer than I did who ended up using it as an expensive bed rail and properly co slept!

It was lovely though waking up to see her smiling at me (when not yelling). She did end up in her own room at 5 months as by that point every time we moved she woke up, so if your baby is a light sleeper you might not find it great after the first month or two.

Have a look at the NCT bedside crib...you can hire it for 6 months so no massive outlay. We use a bedside cot...DD doesn't actually make it over to that mattress but is great for holding pillows etc and I know she won't roll out of bed!

Yes I have the same one as Xcountry above and it is perfect! and only £60 on amazon so much cheaper than other ones out there. Agree if you ditch the awful bedding that comes with it then it is great. I really really liked having a co-sleeper, sometimes when the newborn baby is unsettled they only need a gentle stroke from mummy to stay asleep, which you can do without having to even sit up in bed. Otherwise you have to get all the way up out of bed, reach down into moses basket/crib which is much more of a pain when its 3 am and its the 5th time they've woken up!

We just bought a Chicco Next2Me on offer from NCT for £134.99, which is only about £10 more than renting a Bednest for six months. It's currently sat in the box in the hallway, but I've had a root through and it looks pretty cosy to me!

Lollipop11 · 04/07/2014 13:32

Im so pleased so many of you have used one! I am now off to google all the options :) i think its now on the 'need to have ' list

Gail is this a similar brand? I wouldn't use the bumpers (have heard they aren't safe) but it also seems a good deal:

I bought a 30 quid crib and £10 mattress from kiddicare. Assembled it with one side left off. Used fourth side to support under mattress by drilling in 4 screws. I use luggae straps to tie it to my bed. With that description it sounds really homemade! It looks very good, though and I'm about to use it for the second time, so it's worked great for the money!

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 04/07/2014 15:15

I had a bednest. Was fab but deffo gateway to cosleeping Grin DSis borrowed it afterwards and her DC stayed in it for 6months which made me feel better about it. Smile

I spent a ridiculous amount of time researching bedside cribs when I was earlier in my pregnancy after a few people telling me that their little ones didn't like the Moses basket. I got the Chicco Next2Me crib from Mamas & Papas which cost £150. 34 wks so not using it yet but we've had it out and assembled it and it looks good. Suits us well as it has wheels so we can just wheel it through to the living room during the day (we're in a flat) and it's a nice neutral colour. Oh and M&Ps crib sheets fit it too.

Redling · 04/07/2014 19:29

Ah I'm sad now, I really wanted one of the co sleeping bedside ones when I got pregnant, but somehow changed my mind (DH didn't see the point, also I worried target were loads expensive) so now I have a crib which will be next to the bed, but it hasn't got a drop side. It is nice (and very well priced!) and I can drape my hand in for comfort etc but I still wish now that I'd gone for a bednest type. Oh well, at least he'll be next to me.

GingerRodgers · 05/07/2014 09:55

I've got an ikea 3 sided cot (2nd hand off eBay) and new mattress. Will find link but there's a fab site with full instructions in how to turn into side cot. Hang on...

GingerRodgers · 05/07/2014 09:56

Arms reach co sleeper was brilliant highly recommend

Smitten1981 · 05/07/2014 10:00

John Lewis do a fab one called the Troll Bedside Crib. I loved it. DS was in there until he was 6 months old. Highly recommend it.

capet · 05/07/2014 10:02

This is the one thing I regret not getting!
I was breastfeeding and think a bedside cot/co sleeper would have been amazing.
If I have another baby I will def get one

Lalalax3 · 05/07/2014 13:09

Careful with NCT bed nest rental, the delivery charge is astronomical

Bootoyou2 · 05/07/2014 15:05

If you get it through the bednest site not NCT they have a July offer with no delivery charge, cheaper etc.
