I have no experience of this but I would always call epu if your worried about something xx

Im surprised they tried to listen so early. They don't usually try to find the heartbeat until after 16 weeks.

JuniperTisane · 03/07/2014 22:05

Yes I had this at 16 weeks with ds1. My midwife warned me before she tried that she might not hear anything at this stage and when we heard the woosh-woosh she knew straight away it was the cord not the heartbeat and she gave me a quick lesson in the difference between the two sounds. She didnt find the heartbeat that time and she was unconcerned.

hartmel · 04/07/2014 03:21

With my first my doctor heard the heart beat at 13 weeks and with my second the doctor found it at 11 weeks..

I live in America so they start listening to heart beat at 12 weeks, as you only get one ultrasound at 20 weeks.. If you want early scan or Nuchal scan you have to book it private.. Smile

MildDrPepperAddiction · 04/07/2014 03:29

That happened to my sister. Baby was fine. Smile Good luck.

angeltattoo · 04/07/2014 07:44

When MW tried at 16 weeks, she firt said she might not hear it and not to worry of she couldn't find it at this stage. She also said that for any ladies she couldn't find it, she sent them immediately to the assessment unit for a scan.

So, perfectly normal not to find it. But yes, absolutely call o attend the EPU for peace of mind Smile

LittlePeaPod · 04/07/2014 08:09

Op i am sure everything will be fine but contact EPU if you need readsurance. This is the reason some trust won't listen to heartbeats until much later. It sends mums into a worrying panick when midwives can't find the heartbeat.

liesal79 · 04/07/2014 09:03

I really wish she hadn't tried! I don't like feeling so irrational! :)

I am going to EPU at 1 to see if they can find the heartbeat! :)

Same here - 16w1d, heartbeat at 145bpm and my placenta whooshing away! She said it was completely normal, and just shows that everything is working properly in there!

Only1scoop · 04/07/2014 09:50

Good idea to go to Epu....much better than worrying

CarmineRose1978 · 04/07/2014 09:51

Ah sorry, just realised you said she couldn't hear the heartbeat. Nevertheless, don't worry about the placenta thing - just go to the epu if you're anxious, as pp have said. Hope all is well - do post to let us know. Sorry about my misread.

twiglet2 · 04/07/2014 09:56

My midwife asked me to book in after 16 weeks for this reason and did say before she started to try and find it that sometimes it's hard to find, and not to worry if it took a while or if she couldn't pick it up.
Hopefully the EPU will find it quickly and you'll get to have a listen Smile

liesal79 · 04/07/2014 10:47

I'm sure everything is fine, just now facing the waiting game! :)

Just a quick update - The reason they can't hear the heartbeat is my placenta is massive and the baby is underneath! I have had a scan & all is fine!

Only1scoop · 04/07/2014 14:40

So pleased for you what a relief Smile

squizita · 04/07/2014 16:37

I didn't hear whooshing till 20 weeks.

If the baby wasn't getting stuff from the placenta, it would have starved very quickly and there would be no HB though - usually sadly you hear about a placenta working but the HB has gone.
If you're not sure speak to a MW or EPU, but the HB sounds good news. :)

squizita · 04/07/2014 16:39

Sorry is this the other way round?

I still wouldn't be TOO worried because it wasn't a scan, and the listening dopplers are quite crude. If worried ask for a scan you may well SEE a HB that cannot yet be HEARD. :)

liesal79 · 04/07/2014 22:51

Hi squizita
I heard the whooshing of the placenta but no heartbeat, but had a scan & baby is under my placenta that's why! Saw the heartbeat...all fine and measures what it should!!!

OP posts:
squizita · 05/07/2014 18:01

Oh that's such a relief! Yes this is exactly why I would never buy a home doppler ... hearing wrong is so terrifying but seeing on a proper scan gives you a good answer you can trust!
