Large corpus luetum cyst

Hi all!

I'm 9 weeks pregnant with DC2 and during my early scan yesterday the sonographer found a cyst on my right ovary called a corpus luetum. She said it's completely normal and lots of people get them in pregnancy - this I understand and feel ok with but it's the size I'm worried about! It's 4cm!! Surely that's quite big to have on an ovary? She did say it's larger than most.

The lady didn't really explain much else and I had 2 yr old DD with me so couldn't concentrate an awful lot. I just wondered if anyone has ever experienced this and a large one at that? And if it went away or if it ruptured?

Thanks!

It's quite normal, it's what helps to maintain the pregnancy until the placenta takes over

I had one sided pains in early pregnancy and for that reason got an early 6 week scan. The sonographer identified a cyst on my ovary being the probable cause of the pain. Like you she didn't really give any more info than that.

I asked again at my 20 week scan, if the cyst was still there. By 20 weeks it was gone. She said cysts are very, very common and so common in fact that women are not usually told if one if spotted. It is apparently a bruise/rupture from where the ovum was released when I conceived.

I had the same and told its presence am be an indicator of the healthy pg as the hormones produced by the corpus luteum as the ones that halt your menstrual cycle until the placenta starts functioning fully. Like every aspect of pregnancy, things can go awry, but normally it's nothing to worry about. Get them to check it at your 12 and 20 week scans (it will probably be gone by 20 wks).

My sonographer didn't just say it was normal - he actually said it was good! So don't worry Smile
