I am 34 weeks and my GD is becoming out of control. I am taking metformin and insulin but always feel sick and periodically have tummy bugs. My sugars are out of control again and I'm tired all the time. Looking for some support and ideas on what to eat x

I'm 35 weeks and struggling as well.

I'm on glyburide and it gives me lows which scare the heck out of me followed by crazy highs. On Tuesday, I had a low before lunch - my blood sugar was 3.8. I had a few crackers quickly and then a normal lunch (chickpea salad, spinach quiche and veg salad). I've had it before with no problem. 1 hour after lunch my sugar was 10! I drank a whole load of water adn went for a walk. I tested an hour later and it had gone up to 12.2!!! I was so upset.

No advice - just lots of sympathy. It's really hard when you try your best but it all goes pear shaped.

Sympathy from me as well. 34 weeks as well and I'm definitely finding it harder. Foods that used to work are giving higher numbers now. It does look like what works for one person may not work for another. I spoke to someone is diabetic and their recommendations sent my numbers high. Eggs seem to be the only consistent in keeping a low number for me.

Thanks ladies. Ah yes eggs and bacon keep me low but whats the point without bread and tomatoes?? haha. Am sick of felling sick and dry heaving and getting sky high readings when I've had nothing :(. My friend is type 2 and keeps giving me tips but as I keep telling her its not the same thing at all. My sugars have to be between 5.8 and 7.9 whereas type 2 readings can be higher. I'm at the stage where I can just about have naff all to eat without it shooting through the roof! Worst thing is I get up for the loo every 2 hours through the night. THAT is making me ill because I aren't getting quality sleep.

And don't forget the hp sauce to go with eggs and bacon :-) sorry things aren't going to well but just focus on your lo being here in a few weeks and how great that will feel.

Do you adjust the amount of insulin you do with each meal (am type 1 so not sure how they work GD) pregnancy sends your sugar levels doolally anyway and I'm constantly having to do top up doses of insulin ATM but I know from my last pregnancy this will settle Inthe 2nd trimester and back to all over the show.

Speak to your midwife/consultant. They may be able to advise changes to your insulin

ohdearitshappeningtome · 03/07/2014 21:47

As you progress within your pregnancy, the insulin in your body works harder! I'm a type two and before pregnancy I was on 24 units twice a day, by the end of it I was on 176 twice a day in the end they delivered my early and baby was 7lb4 at 36 weeks! I had weekly monitoring! Basically I was eating what I normally did but my body has different ideas! It's just pregnancy it's nothing you have done! definately speak to consultants

Good luck

Hello - newly diagnosed with GD this week and feeling a bit lost and overwhelmed. Can anyone recommend any helpful websites for snack and meal ideas? The leaflet the nurse gave me really doesn't go into much detail. I feel so clueless.

Welcome to the club!

There are US forums which are very active. Babycenter has gestational diabetes mamas and what to expect also has one. I've got a lot of ideas from them.

The key is to find what works for you and when. It's trial and error in the beginning and some of us, however hard we try, have to take meds anyway.
