Ok, so.please don't judge or shout at me (!) but I'm finding it really hard to give up my coffee, I'm 6+1 weeks right now.

My concern is, I also drank a lot of it when pregnant with my previous 2 pregnancies and they resulted in MC Sad

I do recall drinking it when I was pregnant with my two boys, who are both healthy now (6 & 3)

So, I'm wondering whether anybody else continued to drink coffee in early pregnancy and have gone on to have healthy pregnancies / babies? Smile

I didn't know I was pregnant until 7ish weeks. Not a coffee addict, but drank SO much tea plus a daily coffee -I would have been having well over the caffeine recommendations. I didn't cut down that much either until I went off it. Am 41 weeks tomorrow.

squizita · 02/07/2014 10:51

You don't have to give it up completely: the NHS allow 200mg per day as safe. Certainly even the vast majority of people who drink more are fine. Here are the guidelines of how much that is:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx#close
It is nothing like alcohol or unadvised medicines - just not too much!

There is a slight risk raised in post-miscarriage studies - but with these there is a correlation not a cause i.e. other risk factors (working nights, being ill and thus feeling tired...) couldn't be ruled out. And the risk was associated with excess coffee, not just a bit.

I have a cup of coffee or tea or cola a day.
After that I have decaff.
The best instant brands are Percol or Kenco.
The best 'drinking out' chain IMO is Costas, then Starbucks for decaff flavour.
:)

SeaSaltMill · 02/07/2014 10:52

Cant you go decaff? I am not a caffeine head, but usually start my day with a large skinny latte, plus one or two cups of tea during the day.

Now I get a decaff, so I still get the taste but not the caffeine.

SeaSaltMill · 02/07/2014 10:55

Nero is pretty good for decaff!

Gennz · 02/07/2014 10:55

I have 1 x double shot flat white every day. I think that's about 150mg of caffeine. On very rare occasions (like twice in my whole pregnancy) I've had two. If you are making sure to keep your intake to a reasonable level I think it's fine. I would REALLY struggle to cut it out completely! I am 18 + 3.

ScouseBird8364 · 02/07/2014 10:58

Thanks guys Wink I'm currently sat o/s Costa while doing my Uni work, with my 2nd cup Sad but opted for a Decaff this time! Think I'll bring in the Decaff to the house too! Smile

I don't smoke, and currently don't drink Alcohol (as I'd not long started Slimming World before finding out I was cooking again, hmm!) so have no major vices, but apart from my caffeine.

I have around 3 small cups of decaff tea a day, and maybe 2 cups of coffee, some days none actually, guess I'm just worrying about everything I ate)/ drank when I had the MCs Sad

Thanks for your reassurance though guys and for not shooting me down in flames Smile

I get a grand skinny latte every morning. it's 150 mg and it has kept me sane and happy to have my one good coffee a day. sometimes I get looks from people in the shop (35 +5 weeks) but I'd like to see just one of them say something to me about it!!

nyldn · 02/07/2014 11:05

I think if you're worried you may want to stick to espresso drinks rather than filter coffee, which really varies from place to place? I know Starbucks filter coffee has an extremely high amount of caffeine, like 400 mg for a medium. if you like a certain place and get the same thing regularly, check their nutritional values on their website, should list the caffeine level.

Heatherbell1978 · 02/07/2014 11:05

Hey, my pre-preggers routine was a grande skinny latte from Starbucks every morning and about 2/3 cups of tea during the rest of the day. All I've done is switch the morning latte to a decaf one and I've barely noticed the difference in the taste. Still drinking a fair amount of tea but don't drink any other caffeinated drinks (eg coke) so I'm not too worried.

squizita · 02/07/2014 11:07

Nyldn I've had looks drinking DECAFF and drinking Becks Blue ZERO BOOZE beer. In my more ragey days I have walked up and said icily "for your information it's decaff/0%" - once though the person said I shouldn't even be out... I was only 22 weeks gone!.

squizita · 02/07/2014 11:08

I'm a recurrent miscarrier and was told "one cup a day then decaff" by my very respected consultant. :) He asked where I usually drank it (Costas) so it was a strong one!

nyldn · 02/07/2014 11:08

squiz, you're nicer than me! I fully expect that I would see red and tell someone to mind their business and F off! good thing it hasn't happened yet Grin

MrsA2 · 02/07/2014 11:41

Also for decaf, Co-op fair trade filter coffee is decent. Not all decaf brands are actually that low on caffeine so worth checking the packaging before assuming you aren't having a lot of caffeine.

Greenstone · 02/07/2014 12:36

OP it makes me cross that you're even anticipating that people will judge or flame you. (Not cross at you but just cross that there is always the potential for pregnant women to be leapt on for the foods they're consuming. But I've had this rant on this board already so won't start again.)

Anyway, I was on about 2 cups of strong filter coffee (home-brewed) a day before getting pregnant and looked forward to them so much every day. At 6 weeks like you I still really felt like coffee and weaning myself down to 1 was hard.

Helpfully, a bit of an aversion kicked in not long after, so maybe you can 'look forward' Hmm to that if you do want to cut down? During my aversion period I switched to tea and I haven't really looked back. Most days I now drink two strong cups of tea and I am not trying to cut down further than that, it does me nicely. I often have a coffee - latte or flat white while out or a cup of filter at home - at the weekends but find I am less bothered about even that.

I don't smoke, I'm not drinking alcohol, and I don't drink any fizzy drinks. I feel no guilt.

And congratulations to you :)

Gen35 · 02/07/2014 15:06

I drink a good strong cup of coffee every morning and sometimes an instant too when very tired. Just going into 3rd trimester with dc2. With dc1, I really struggled in trimester 1 and drank a proper tall/grande Capp most days. I reckon if you mc, its mostly due to other factors, very little is really known about why most mc happen. If you want to cut down, m and s and sainsburys both do half caff filter coffee - I've got to cut back again as caffeine can step up babies when bf (although dc1 wasn't affected!).

Missingcaffeine · 02/07/2014 21:03

I weaned down as soon as we started trying, as used to have about 9 cups of coffee a day. It was bloody awful, but felt better for it in the end!
The only thing you might find, is that you may actually go off coffee soon. I stopped enjoying team and coffee weeks 7-12.
Good luck!

ikeaismylocal · 02/07/2014 21:17

I drank one cup of coffee a day with my ds and his pregnancy was easy, I also drink one cup of coffee a day with my current pregnancy and so far there have been no issues.

I live in Sweden and they don't advise avoiding coffee, many mums drink lots and lots of coffee and Swedish coddee is really really strong.

Best of luck with your pregnancy.

porcito · 03/07/2014 01:43

Another one here who's drunk coffee the whole way through. And more than the limit on many days. I'm not talking 4 litres of the stuff, but generally going over is fine. The 200mg limit in the UK is also probably erring on the side of caution and up to that limit is absolutely fine.

weebairn · 03/07/2014 06:51

I mostly have decaff coffee which I don't mind, but I drink several (3-4) cups of tea a day which I think is fine.
You can buy decaff ground coffee for home which still tastes pretty nice in a cafetiere. My boyfriend happily drinks it too. I tend to always order decaff out (though I would be pretty grumpy with anyone who dared tell me I couldn't drink normal coffee as if it was any of their business- grr at your story, squizita!)

I remember after giving birth last time more than one cup of coffee made me really quite jittery cause I wasn't used to it! So we've always had decaff in the house since then. The guidelines are quite generous and my understanding is you can have say a bit more one day, a bit less the day after. I was a bit more careful in first trimester but still had at least one cup of something caffeinated every day. No problems with either pregnancy.

Martie1 · 03/07/2014 12:54

Im in no way a coffee addict but just prior to getting pg had started to really enjoy coffee and was entertaining coffee purchases I would never have considered before. So pg has been a bit of a slap in the face for me coffee wise.

I can't say I stick to the nhs guidelines. I can easily go a day without any caffine whatsoever. Other times I have up to 4 cups a day. It's generally likely to be one coffee and three teas. That's on a really extreme day though and they have been few. I take decaf when I can and if im getting a coffee out as a treat I either get decaf or one shot only.

People keep asking me have a I gone off tea/coffee. I dread that point. I love my tea it cures many ills in my head!

Zara8 · 03/07/2014 13:53

1-2 cups of coffee (Nespresso, French press or other espresso) and multiple cups of decaff after that. Often a cup of tea as well although mostly it's decaff tea.

I'm 25 weeks, have been drinking coffee again since about 14 weeks (when the smell of it stopped making me want to vomit!).

There is no way I'd get through the day without one or two real coffees - I have a 20 month old DS this time round too!

Baby kicks more after my morning coffee GrinGrinGrin
