A question about vitamin D

The advice I've seen from the nhs suggests that I should be taking 10 micrograms a day, but the tablets I ordered from tesco yesterday are 12.5 micrograms per tablet. They also say on the side that pregnant women should consult their doctor before taking any supplements. So I am a little Confused. Should I try and source 10 microgram tablets, or won't it matter? Thanks. Flowers

I think the extra 2.5mg will be fine, you'd have to take more than that to overdose. Your doc will just tell you to take it anyway, and frolic acid if you're in early pregnancy. You can always check with a pharmacist if you're worried.

I don't think it will really matter, you will also be getting vitamin d from the sun at this time of year.

The only vitamin you need to watch out for is vitamin a, pregnant women shouldn't take that if I remember rightly.

Thanks for replying. Smile I'm already taking folic acid so I'll start on the vitamin d too.

ikea that sounds like a good excuse for sitting in the garden watching my 2 and 4 year old running about, while I soak up a bit of sun!

If they are pregnancy vitamins or just single vitamins it will be fine. 2 extra micrograms won't be an issue.

I just take Tesco own brand pregnacare.

I think natural vitamin d is much easier for the body to absorb than synthetic vitamin d so it's a good idea to catch a bit of sun don't forget icecream to keep you cool ;)

Vitamin D overdose happens when you get over 40,000iu of vitamin D per day, for an extended period. An hour in the UK summer sun for someone with mid-tone white skin (not super-pale but not olive skin either) produces around 1000iu. In winter in the UK it's almost impossible to produce any vitamin D through sunlight even if you spend all day outdoors in the nip.

A 12.5mg tablet is equal to 500iu, so you'd have to be getting through a whole box of vitamins everyday while constantly sunbathing to get anywhere near an overdose.

It's just a single vitamin. It was the only one I could order on tesco online. No one mentioned taking vitamin d when I was pregnant with my first 2 so this is new thing for me.

I do have a sneaky magnum in the freezer, ikea, but I think the 2 year old would wrestle it out of my hand in seconds! The 4 year old doesn't care for them. Strange boy.
