A question for rhesus neg mums with toddlers

Do you worry about them crawling over you and accidentally (or otherwise) kneeing or kicking you? DS kneed me today while I was lying next to him. Now I'm pretty sure the midwife and sonographer press harder with dopplers / scanning equipment. It didn't hurt me in the slightest but just felt weird as I guess he caught me off guard. At what point do you worry about bumps etc?

If it was hard enough to really hurt or if there was bleeding after. One of the heifers kicked me in one of my pregnancies and this cause major bleeding but luckily babies were RH neg too (DH is pos but carries the neg allele from his mothers side).

If you are worried is there a maternity assessment unit you can call and get advice from? if you need an anti d they can give you one up to 72 hours later and it still be effective on any antibodies produced. hope that helps

Greenybrownish · 26/06/2014 21:12

Rh neg here and can honestly say didn't worry in slightest through all 3 dc. Soft play visits and everything as usual, work in play school too up until just before birth date and it was never an issue with the boisterous ones.

Thanks. I had anti-D the other week for a headbutt which did hurt. (My child sounds evil - he's not!) and I think I could probably find reason to get it most days as I'm a worrier. But realistically I need to find a boundary of when I need to get it and when I don't. He was lying next to me and just kind of wiggled around pressing his knee into me. This is find isn't it?

Thanks greeny. So you got bumped etc and no issues at all?

Yes I'm sure you ll be fine- I can't even remember the midwife making an issue of it to me. Definitely not evil just a typical toddler I m sure. Try not to worry I m sure apart from extra injections at birth time everything will be great.

Fanjango · 26/06/2014 21:19

I got knocked over by a car door when my car was hit as I put in a car seat. I was 32 weeks pregnant with twins. They were fine as was I. Didn't even think about the rhesus bit until later. All turned out well. I'm sure you'll be fine Smile

Greenybrownish · 26/06/2014 21:20

God yes, kids jumping all over me , pretty sure I had 2 slips on ice (clumsy!!) and probably walked into a few doors - oh and fell off radiator I was standing on to fix curtain ( don't ask ! ) and all hunky dory ... Think broke toe that time tho !!

Nononon · 26/06/2014 21:22

Ha Greeny you sound rather accident prone! I must remember how several midwives have now told me that they've never seen any problems with rhesus neg in all their careers

And wowzers Fandango, sounds like you had a lucky escape there!

so the anti d from what I remember (ages ago) should cover you for three weeks?? maybe double check that next time you see your midwife but I think it does.

SilverLinings2014 · 26/06/2014 21:52

I had anti-d recently due to bleeding caused by partial placenta abruption. My consultant advised that a jab covers you for 6 weeks - that's why it's routinely given to Rh neg mums-to-be at 28 and 34 weeks - so if your last jab was recent you should be fine.

Nononon · 26/06/2014 22:18

Fairly early on in pregnancy so only had 250 units (think it ups up 500 after 20 weeks and at 28 weeks it's 1500, if I remember correctly. ) so not sure the 250 would last quite 6 weeks but maybe 3. It was 2 weeks ago.

The more I think about it he just pressed into me which I have had done forcefully in examinations and scans so I just need to chill Confused

I'm on my 4th pregnacy and never really worried about it at all! My first three where close in under 4 years so I got plenty of kicks from them!

I was told it was falls/car accidents ect you had to get check for!

Found out after my ex husbsnd is also negative meaning my 3 oldest are to so I never needed all the jabs etc but this time father is postive!

grocklebox · 26/06/2014 22:29

a toddler couldn't possibly crawl over you or knee you hard enough to mix your blood with that of your foetus.

Nononon · 14/07/2014 11:08

Just wondering/worrying about this again after my toddler had a major tantrum this morning when I was trying to carry him. He was kicking and flailing his arms everywhere and pushing into my tummy. As it didn't hurt does that mean it's ok?

MissYamabuki · 14/07/2014 14:56

Yes I have been kneed by my toddler... it hurt and I was a bit shocked TBH, caught me completely unguarded.

I wouldn't have kicked up a fuss but I had a very silly fall later the same day Blush I phoned the midwife for advice and was told there are no guidelines for antiD in early preg (13 wk) so after much hmmming they gave me an injection just to be on the safe side. I had to have the "normal" injection at 28 wk, too.

Roseinwinter yes if you get a painful blow you should have anti-D. I worry about it perhaps too much though! From what I can gather there is no cause for concern unless it's a significant blow/bump such as a car accident.

It has to be quite a significant bump/knock because the risk is mixing of your blood and foetus's blood. So it has to have been hard enough to cause some bleeding (not neceserily bleeding you'd be aware of or see though). My toddler gave me a very hard, double-footed kick right on my bump when I was pregnant with my second (in his sleep, when he was in our bed, so not on purpose!). I called the assesment centre to ask if I should be checked and they said yes if I thought it was a significant kick and it hurt me (I had a bruise so thought yes!). I had some blood taken to check antibody levels and they were all normal, although they then gave me a jab anyway, which I'd thought they wouldn't if the anti body levels were normal. Actually I had quite a nice couple of hours in a very quiet mat assesment centre being given toast and orange juice and sitting on a bouncy ball thing instead of being at work!

Redling · 17/07/2014 14:01

I fell over a few weeks ago but landed on my knees, it was a hell of a knock leaving them bruised and bloodied but as I'd just had the Anti D a couple of weeks before, and as I hadn't hit the bump I assumed I was OK. If it only lasts 6 weeks though, and I had it at 28 weeks am I supposed to get it again before baby comes (I'm 36 weeks) or do you just top up if you have an accident?

minipie · 17/07/2014 15:15

In my last pregnancy I was told you need it if you bleed (after a certain point, I think 16 weeks?) or if there could be internal bleeding - which would generally mean the blow would be hard enough to leave an external bruise as well.

MultipleMama · 17/07/2014 16:06

Negative here, and my toddlers climb over me all the time but DH is also negative (as are all our children).

I doubt you have anything to worry about, it takes a good bit of force to cause a bleed instead that chushy uterus of ours Grin. If you're that concerned talk to your MW about it x

Babytinx11 · 17/07/2014 22:47

I'm rh-neg and my midwife said if it hurts or you get bleeding call them so it's pretty much the same rule of thumb as if your not rh-neg might be different now but that's what they said with DS :)
