I had very bad heel pain in my first pregnancy. I saw a physio at the hospital (refered by midwife) and she offered some heel stretching exercises and said where the lightest springiest shoes. It was called something like plantar fasciitis or heel spurs. I used to hop around when first getting up until it warmed up then it was just a bit painful. It pretty much went away in the first few weeks after the baby. With just the odd twinge.

Yes, I still have sore feet in the mornings, I'm 9.5 months post baby. I think it has to do with the ligaments softening and as a result the bones move a bit in the feet. I had dh rubbing my feet everymorning before I got up! That helped a lot!

Sounds like it might be plantar fasciitis - thats inflammation of the sole of your foot. Its often related to shoes - as somebody else said trainers with a supportive instep often help.
Unfortunately the only other thing that helps is drugs like ibuprofen that you can;t take when you're pregnant, but paracetamol would make it feel more comfortable, and try keeping off your feet for a few days if you can.
Might be worth going to see your Gp about it and see what they suggest...

could also be sciatica, it affects the soles oy feet terribly

Hi Kerry, I'm an OT and have dealt with foot pain from time to time. You haven't really given enough info about the type of pain you're experiencing for me to offer a real theory but there are a number of things it could be.

Some people have mentioned plantar fasciitis below, this tends to be located within a specific area of the foot, typically the heel, and the pain may not match either side. You are at more risk of developing this when pg as you're carrying extra weight.

Also when you're pg your body makes hormones that relax you which is great for your pelvis stretching when baby comes out but it also puts your at greater risk of soft tissue injury. If it's this kind of pain you will feel it inside your foot rather than just on the sole.

It may also be that your extra weight has made your feet sore perhaps combined with not wearing supportive enough shoes.

I would recommend you speak to your midwife who can refer you to the antenatal physiotherapist who will examine you properly. If the pain is very serious they may be able to give you some crutches temporarily. In the meantime your GP can prescribe codeine for you in pg if paracetamol isn't helping. While waiting for appointments keep off your feet as much as possible and wear flat soft shoes like trainers, not hard flip flops/sandals - you want some 'bounce' in the sole. If the point of pain is very specific you can buy some cheap foam insoles andcut a piece out where it hurts - this should relieve the pressure a bit on that point.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask more questions.

Have you tried wide trainers? They were the only thing that fitted my feet in the last 4 weeks of my pregnancy, so I do sympathise - I had to really stretch them width ways to get them on, but did manage, and my feet were huge!

Love 'em or hate 'em BUT crocs are brill for me atm. I'm only 19 weeks but suffer with spd, last sat after a days shopping I got home and could hardly walk. Without thinking I put on my crocs and was amazed, they protected and relieved my feet so much...

I have only just got a pair so have only worn them a couple of times but they are the comfiest shoes ever. They are also quite wide fitting so hopefully they will see me through...

More protection than flip flops and more comfier. HTH.

My daughter is almost 2.5 yrs and about 2 months after she was born my feet started to get really stiff and painful, as if they wouldn't bend. I had terrible pain on the outside of one of my feet that would reduce me to tears by the evening. I was very miserable as I would hobble around in pain all day. If I sat still for any length of time my feet would totally seize up until I got moving a bit.
I went to a podiatrist who made me orthotics (prescriptive insoles) and these helped a lot.
The relaxin that your body produces makes your ligaments stretch but mine didn't ping back afterwards. I'm double jointed and have very, very baggy ligaments now which have caused problems with other joints including my back.
On the good side though, my feet have almost returned to normal, but it's taken all this time.
I bought shoes from 'Love those Shoes' (they have an web site) which helped. Look for shoes that are well supported, springy and wide enough.
Crocs would be perfect for you and come in lots of funky colours, they are about £29.00

kerry26 · 08/09/2006 22:00

crocs are these: crocs

The best price I have found them are from America priced at £15 approx. The pound is strong against the dollar so works out cheap..also I have been unable to find any UK sites offering them below £30 ish. www.taylorshoes.com

This site is brill and I have ordered several pairs along with friends and family etc. All without problems. BTW No it's not my company but I'm sure I should be on commission....!!

Hi, treatment would depend on what is causing the problem. t could be a number of thins. Is it on the ball of yoour foot (metatarsal head area) or is it in the arch (inner) near to the heel and worse after rest?
Pregnancy makes not only the pelvis more lax but also most other joints in the body not too mention oedema (walter retention) exacerbating things.
many women go from wearing high heels to flatties - not the best for the plantar fascia, achilles tendon and metatarsal area. There are many thing you can do to ease the pain but it does depend on the cause. I would recommend seeing a podiatrist not a physio (admittedly physio's can help with stretches but they are not foot experts) hope this helps
