What to do on mat leave?

I go on maternity leave next week, and will have 5 weeks till due date. I know the usual things are to relax, batch cooking to stock freezer, cleaning, getting last things ready.
However, I won't be in my own home - I will be at my parents house. So batch cooking and cleaning really aren't required! I will obviously help out with the chores, but can't deep clean in the same way I would in my own house!
I'm really worried I am going to get bored - as I am not a "do nothing" sort of a person - always on the go and like to keep busy. I can't go out on long walks due to SPD, although I will keep up with the dogs 2 walks a day. Friends will all be working.
What sort of things do other people do on mat leave to keep busy?

mssleepyhead - I really wish I could learn to knit! I have tried so many times - my mum and my granny have both tried to teach me and failed miserably. It's just not a skill I have the capacity to learn.
Done the hair cut already, as I am moving and wanted my regular hair dresser to do it.
Like the time capsule idea. What sort of things are you putting in it?

I slept a lot. Long lazy lie ins which by the end I needed as my bladder and baby woke me every half an hour all night.

I read GF. Don't bother. In a way I am glad I did as I took the minute parts that I found helpful (how to change a nappy and bath a baby) and chortled at the rest.

I posted a lot on my ante-natal group about pish.

Happy days

Read all the books/watch all the movies you've been meaning to read/see for ages. You won't get the chance once DC arrives.

Learn to knit and make something for your little one - hats are easy, as are baby blankets.

Get a pedicure / facial / massage

Sleep. And sleep some more. And, when you've woken up, treat yourself to a nap.

I walked lots. I read (and have pretty much failed to read any fiction since my daughter was born - I packed books in my hospital bag. I was clueless!). I had a pedicure - which was a real treat for my swollen feet. I also sorted out all of our photos on our camera - so prepared a couple of albums of old holiday photos - very gratifying to get that sorted.

i did my family tree. didnt get to my wedding scrapbook though.

Time capsule: a little photo album with photos of things like family, our car, our house; our neighbourhood - his firsts, basically; newspapers; receipts for things like the weekly shop; a football shirt (dh is a big real madrid fan!); a baby catalogue from John Lewis; a take away menu; letters from family to DS on his birthday... That's what's in my mind so far but more to follow.

Made one for my sister and her husband when they got married and they loved it. We've been waiting for an excuse to make one for us ever since!

I intend on eating cake and resting until the little one arrives.

I've got box sets to catch up on and a few bits to finish round the house but I'm trying not to over-exert myself.

I got a bit over prepared and had my hospital bag packed and little ones clothes washed at 34 weeks.

Sleep, drink cups of tea, lounge around in pjs, eat things in the day nice and slowly and appreciate the stillness of it all before baby comes.

On a practical note are there any birthdays coming up? Buy cards and presents and wrap now.

Sleep some more.

Heatherbell1978 · 22/06/2014 22:38

I'm same as you OP, start mat leave in a few weeks when I'm 35 weeks so 5 wks before due date. I'm pretty organised so there won't really be any baby stuff to sort and DH has a list of house stuff! I'm also a bit worried about being bored......I bought a swimsuit from H&M which was quite cheap? Less than £15 I think.
Haven't used it yet but planning to do some swimming.....and walking.....going to buy a few box sets.......I have a yoga DVD....and I have friends I can meet for lunch who are working......I really want to be active if I can as I have a fear that as soon as I stop, that'll be it, I'll never bother getting back off the sofa again!

Roxie85 · 23/06/2014 05:14

I would have liked to go to the cinema, watch movies in my pjs under the duvet on the sofa, read, go wandering and have lots of naps as you never get maternity free time after your first as next time youll already have one to look after.
I finished at 36+5 and started early labour at 37 weeks so only got 2 days of rest. In hindsight i wish id left earlier as sleeping doesnt happen so much those first few weeks with a newborn.

Mummymidwife87 · 23/06/2014 06:12

I do a lot of napping.
Have made some spag bol and chilli and frozen it.
Am going to bake this week.
Meet up with friends with babies and also other friends on their daya off.
Finished sorting baby stuff out.
Sorted out the side board, got rid of rubbish.

Research local facilities and activities for mums and babies.

Clean
Cook meals
Make an effort to meet friends on their lunch breaks
