Dads guide to labour

I have asked DH if he can read up a bit on labour & what he can do during it cause I know he'll probably panic & ask for them to sedate me or something! Only he's not much of a reader & has asked if he can get a video or CDs or something instead has anyone any experience of such things? I could read to him but I've got enough to think about! Lol

There is a book called "the expectant dads survival guide" by Rob Kemp... Don't know if its audio or anything sorry. But it is vin bite size jokey chunks.
Does he have problems with reading like dyslexia or just not like it? Because if its just not his hobby, IMO he should bite the bullet and make himself read the info: 2 hours of his life maybe but it will make life so much easier in hospital!

I've hired a doula for this very reason! The 'it'll be alright' vibe I'm getting from the boyf isn't very reassuring! I want to know that I'm going to be alright and that I don't have to worry about him either. To be honest, I think my boyf is in for a shock in lots of ways. I've had a lot to do with babies and children, and I'm thinking that I'll be shocked by lots of it, he really hasn't, so it could be bad for him. Haha.

My partner did a one-day "dads to be" course which was great. We didn't want to do nct. I got most of my info/support from pregnancy yoga classes.
We also did nhs ante-natal classes which were very useful. Do you not have them where you are?

ohthegoats · 21/06/2014 15:17

We've booked NCT, but due to work commitments, I'm missing 2 of them, and he's missing 3 of them. Ace...

Yes, why does he not want to read? Videos are unlikely to be as in depth as a book in terms of preparation. If he wants to see births, some OBEM would do that.Smile

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 21/06/2014 16:34

We did Nct and it went through all about the Dad's role in labour, i.e not sitting in a corner on your phone!

Are you doing antenatal classes or Nct?

ruth1104 · 21/06/2014 16:43

Hmmm I'd like something like this too, but including the 'what happens after' stage which of course OBEM doesn't. My DH is extremely short on time at the moment (for good reasons) and is reading in his second language so it's pretty hard to persuade him to do... What can I expect from nhs ante natal classes?

Barbsta · 21/06/2014 17:41

My husband was just avoiding learning about the labour to stay in an ignorant bliss so I bought him a book. He hasn't put it down and it has him laughing loads it's called fatherhood by Marcus berkmann and it's don't from the male point of view :)

DearDinah · 21/06/2014 20:44

He says he switches off reading & can't take it in :-/
I forgot about the ante natal classes we've got them in a couple of weeks so will see what comes of them. Thanks for the book suggestions, my mums also my birth partner so as long as someone can keep their head I think I'll be ok!

Hopefully the NCT will help you both feel prepared.

If not, and we aren't talking actual problems reading, I think he needs to bite the bullet and concentrate! Doesn't he ever have to read a document, or a policy, or an instruction manual for work?
