Constipation - is lactulose okay to take?

I'm struggling a bit with slow digestion. Is lactulose okay to take? Or do i need to see a Dr? I'm also trying natural remedies nut lactulose was always my quick fix when things got bad.
Angry (that's a constipated face not an angry one!)

Yeah it's fine to take, the only problem I had was the fact it's vile and needed to wash it down with a strong flavoured drink

Tommy · 19/06/2014 16:03

yes - I had to take it throughout all my pregnancies. We called it "gloop" - very sticky but very effective

Great thanks. I'll start taking some. I usually put it in my tea-it makes it a bit sweet tasting but bearable. I don't like it straight from the spoon.

Its amazing stuff love it its my saviour but can be a bit fierce was told to take 45ml a day but reduced as I then spent 3 hours tied to a loo to much amusement of my mother

Hello, here is a patient info leaflet about constipation in pregnancy, it includes a bit about lactulose as well as info on various other potential treatments. Hope this is helpful x

my doc prescribed it when i hadn't even told them i had constipation when i first told them i was pregnant, so yes it's safe. I went and got it anyway, thinking there must be a reason and glad i did cause i needed it, 5 days was max with no movement, lately tho (now 28+6) it's switched to all bran type cereal and having an activia yogurt everyday and sometimes twice a day, feel great now.

Thanks. I think I need to start working on prevention rather than cure. I know i don't eat enough of the right things. But it's good to know i can safely reach for the lactulose if all else fails!

I have started a rigid regime of a big bowl of all bran every morning. With shredded wheat sometimes too. Plus lots of pineapple which I find is the best fruit for this.

And water water water. Bit boring but it's working even with progesterone supplements which make it worse.

P.s. This is having a side effect of controlling weight gain. The all bran really does make you feel less hungry in the mornings and less likely to snack. If I don't have it (I ran out) I ended up having lots of toast and butter instead!!

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 20/06/2014 16:00

I lived on lactulose throughout pregnancy Blush

UnknownGnome · 20/06/2014 16:47

I might try the All Bran. I can put apricots on it for added de-blocking. I usually have toast which, as you say, isn't filling and usually leads to mid-morning snacking.

Moomin - I hope you were able to lay off the lactulose after pregnancy. Pregnancy does funny things to our bodies...inside and out!

All-Bran flakes with sultanas is quite nice, and with apricots would be even nicer. I don't like the plain 'stick' style all-bran - flakes just seem more civilized.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 20/06/2014 22:22

Unknown I had bowel surgery as a baby and it's buggered me for life. I take a lot less since DD was born though, pregnancy is a bitch for constipation!

VaselineOnToast · 21/06/2014 10:44

A pregnant friend of mine swears by coconut water to help with constipation, just in case you might want some alternatives.

MissMagpie · 22/06/2014 20:07

Kiwi fruit is good for constipation. It is the only fruit to contain a certain natural laxative. It helps me anyway. Eat a couple then things should get moving within the day....
