Struggling with water

I am 10+3 weeks pregnant. Sickness is reaching fever pitch this week Sad but it'll all be worth it in the end!

Midwife, husband, Mother, everyone keeps banging on about how I need to be constantly drinking water (I should never have let husband near the pregnancy book - he's driving me mad!) the problem is that I am really, really struggling with it. Is that normal??

Usually I love water but I have a constant horrible taste in my mouth and when I drink it it feels like it's sitting right on the top of my stomach, ready to make a reappearance. It feels all horrible and cold. I get the same feeling if I drink juice, warm it up slightly, or sip it very slowly.

It is so frustrating!! Literally nothing else makes me feel as sick as water does. Has anyone else experienced this??

I have this too (I also have HG). You don't need to be constantly drinking water (or anything), you just need to dring enough not to get dehydrated.

I really can't stomach plain water, but can manage skimmed milk, and some warm Ribena. Other tips from the HG thread include ice cubes, ice lollies, tonic water, sparking water.

Sorry that you're struggling. I would just try to find any drink that seems palatable and stick to that for now. Hopefully you're almost over the worst of it.

Thanks. Sorry what is HG?

Hyperemesis gravidarum. Basically excessive vomiting and nausea in pregnancy, beyond 'morning sickness' levels.

Hey, sorry to hear you're struggling, I've been exactly the same for weeks I only drank sugar free fizzy drinks, couldn't stand water or the usual squash. At 16 weeks and now on cyclizine to help with the sickness, I manage water, but had to get new squash, more expensive fruity ones instead of our usual robinsons. Just drink what you can at this point.
If the nausea and sickness gets too bad, don't wait, go and see your midwife or doctor for help.

I had HG in both pg, and spent several weeks on a drip in hospital. At my worst, I couldn't even have a shower or brush my teeth without being sick.

I could usually manage to melt an ice cube in my mouth. When I was over the worst, I mostly drank grapefruit juice mixed with fizzy water.

have you tried crushed ice? or frozen grapes.
Anything to keep even a little fluid going in. I found ice helped. I had HG for the first 20 weeks and was on a drip a few times. It's hellish but it can and probably will pass with a little help from your MW or GP.

I'm the opposite - used to hate water, now hate everything else!
When they say in books "drink plenty of water" what they actually mean is drink plenty. It doesnt matter what it is, (not alcohol) but need to keep you hydrated.
Flat coke can be quite good for rehydration after sickness. Basically - whatever you can stomach.

I feel constantly thirsty but have the same yucky feeling in the mouth a d sore tummy when I drink tap water. I find that drinking water that has been chilled in the fridge helps as it doesn't taste as bad. I also wondered whether some electrolyte drink might help. Perhaps we are salt and mineral deficient?

Organic coconut water is great for rehydration. Keep it in the fridge and drink ice cold. I had the same issue as you and survived on that and ..hem.. Coke.

i hated water til few weeks ago. it was only tolerable for me with lots and lots of ice..
bad idea though. i ended up having cough and alot of cough induced vomiting.
try mixing something in water...try something like tang or something of the sort whatever's available in your area. it will subside with time...but yes stay well hydrated, it also helps alot with combating constipation and dizzyness. try juices or melon and watermelon too.whatever you can tolerate. all the best.
