Baby too small for age

Hi, at 33 wks i had a scan to check the babies size because of concerns he was too small for the age, Scan showed he weighed 4lb. Had another scan today now at 35 weeks and he has only put on 4oz. The doctors told me thats not enough and the best thing to do is to get him out very soon on friday in fact. Scan showed placenta is functioning well and blood flow is normal, baby is active and i feel fine. Im wondering if i should just keep monitoring baby daily and have another scan. Does anyone have any advice please very worried about babies size at this stage.

Also scan showed the amniotic fluid was low too.

i have been having grow scans over the past few weeks ( was in hospital for placental abruption ) and one of the signs they look for if baby isn't growing is reduced amniotic fluid. 4 lbs is small but not really small - a lot of twins are born at that size and are fine. I am 35 weeks as well and will deliver early - my baby is just over 5 pounds at the minute ( as of yesterday's estimate!) hope you get some reassurance from some others

I had this, only I was 39 weeks, not 33! (As it turned out, the amniotic fluid was so little that my waters never actually broke - there was no fluid really to come out!) My baby was born healthy, but it was good that he came out when he did.

I'm sure someone else will be along to give you more advice soon, but I agree with Hana - 4lb is small, but not too small to be perfectly ok if he/she is born early!

Kiminz, my ds2 was small throughout my pregnancy, I had numerous scans to monitor his size and although he kept growing they could see he was still tiny. They delivered him by C-section at 38+5, I think partly because I was trying for a VBAC, so it was an added complication. Anyway, he weighed in at 4lb 15oz, but to reassure you, he was perfectly fine in every other way! No developmental or breathing problems; he didn't need any special care, he fed well and we were home 3 days later.

He's now 6.5 months, still only 14lbs (about the size of an average 4 month old!), but weaning and doing absolutely fine.

I haven't really got any advice as such, just wanted to reassure you that even if your baby is small, it doesn't necessarily mean you/he/she will have problems. Some babies/people are just naturally small!

Good luck and keep us posted !

kiminz - my dd had this problem and was born at 37 weeks at 4 lbs 9 oz. The growth issue was picked up at 22 weeks and I was scanned until she stopped growing. They monitored the placenta and blood flow and as long as these were fine there was no talk (other than a vague threat) of early induction. It was when there had been no growth between scans and the blood flow showed that the blood was being channelled towards the brain (an indicator of problems as the baby 'knows' this is where it is most needed) that they said I had to be induced.

As I said dd was born at 37 weeks (failed induction followed by c-sec) weighing 4 lbs 9 oz. Apart from a couple of hours in SCBU to bring her temperature up she was absolutely fine.

IME, they don't decide the baby has to come out unless its really necessary and if it is, it really is the best thing. DD never looked back and had no problems (other than an unwillingness to BF).

Hope that helps ! Good luck - let us know how you get on.

how are things kiminz?

kiminz · 14/09/2006 04:13

hi to all that responded. I had a healthy baby boy on the 6th of september 3lb 11oz by emergency c section, and yes the previous scan was out by a pound. I went in on wednesday for a ctg and doctors discovered baby's heart rate was dropping so they decided to get him out earlier than expected. He is doing very well in the nursary, he will be in there for awhile to fatten up. Now we are trying to decide on a name for him. Does anyone know what the name bodie means (pronounced as boe-dee) or maybe some different spellings.

Congratulations on the birth your baby boy. Hope all continues to go brilliantly. Bodie - scandinavian in origin from what I remember. Just googled yep and it means basically shelter.

Congratulations on the BIrth of your Babyboys...glad he is doing well
Only have a lil name book nowadays....Boden- from the scandinavian meaning "sheltered" or the french meaning "messenger" or "herald"...so wonder if Bodie is a nickname form of the name Boden?
