Hiya,
I'm 33+4 with my 2nd and want to get a hospital bag packed this week. (DS was born at 35 weeks so want to be ready just encase).
I'm having a total blank about what I should pack for baby

only not me.
How many sleepsuits vests etc?
Thank you x

I googled it and the mumsnet site has a good list.
I'm taking 5 vests and 5 sleepsuits as dd was so sick dh had to bring in more the next day! So I'm hedging my bets this time.
Also, read a tip to take 2 hats as the first will get put on straight away and covered in gunk so have a spare with you.
Can't decide how many packets of maternity pads to buy though? Confused

Waggamamma · 10/06/2014 20:24

I've made my list but not packed yet. I'm packing with the idea that I'll be in for 24hours and dp can bring in extras if needed.

3x sleepsuits
5x vests
2x mits
2x hats
cotton wool
blanket
carseat
10x nappies
1x wipes
2x muslins
1x outfit for coming home

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg · 10/06/2014 20:52

Hmmm, pretty much what Wagamamma said I guess. But no 'going home outfit'. DD1 wore whatever she was wearing. So maybe 5 babygros for 24 hours.

Oh, and I've never used scratchmits. Don't really understand them. They don't stay on, most babygros have them and all three of mine have gone mental if you constrain their hands!

justhayley · 10/06/2014 21:43

Thanks everyone.
I brought a little 1st toy last time round as well.
When people talk of going home outfit, do you mean something special or cardi/coat etc? I'm having a July baby

I've bought a set of soft jersey dungarees with long sleeve vest underneath. it's the first outfit we bought for the baby. I have kept my ds first outfit in his baby memory box, it's jusy sentimental thing really but not necessary. No reason why they can't come home in a sleepsuit.

justhayley · 10/06/2014 22:56

Thank you.
With DS I put him in the first sleep suit / thing I bought when pregnant with a cardi to come home in. It was supposed to be the first thing he was dressed in but DP dressed him while I was being stitched Confused & just put the sleep suit on that was on top of the bag. Actually the outfit he left hospital in was cream so fine for DD, I was sorting out what I could re use the other day & couldn't bring myself to include this outfit as it's just too DS's if that makes any sense lol. Definitely holds sentimental value

For you I highly recommend a flannel to bite on in labour (it was my saviour) also cooled me down and when cold and put on my tummy seemed to help with pain - it was my only form of pain relief with DS & I'll def be having one close by this time round.
Also straws - if you need a drink and are in a funny position they save you from moving. That's pretty much all I remember was necessary lol

I think I took a vest and a sleepsuit and a few first size nappies, and my respisense monitor. Might have taken a few blankets in too and some muslins. With my first I stayed in for a few days, so DH just took a list home and brought stuff in for me the next day when I knew what I wanted rather than trying to second guess before she was born. With my second I was pretty confident we'd be out of there sharpish and we were.

Also scratch mitts? Hats? Good lord. I hate hats on babies. Not sure either of mine have worn them unless it was snowing. And just cut their finger nails if they're scratching.

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg · 12/06/2014 09:40

10 vests and babygros on that hospital list Shock. No way would I take that many. Maybe in an extra bag in the car, but if you don't stay in even the poo-iest baby is unlikely to get through 10. And there isn't masses of room in labour rooms or on wards.

mismylinford · 12/06/2014 09:47

i agree with 10 vests.... you never know!

i pack magazines puzzle books too... call me crazy but a some points in early labour was bored.

hair bobbles another priceless item don't forget

i had a massive snuggly towel too incase i needed a bath or shower... or got a chance at the birthing pool.

your favorite chocolate... you'll need it.

MrsGiraffe12 · 12/06/2014 09:51

MrsGiraffe12 · 12/06/2014 09:51

Oh, and a bath towel for myself too x

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg · 12/06/2014 10:18

So personal isn't it. |The thought of chocolate in labour makes my stomach turn! Glucose tablets were all I packed for actual labour Smile

AuntieMaggie · 12/06/2014 14:06

Can I recommend you pack a few things in a bag incase you get taken in suddenly or have an extended stay? I've just spent 2 days on the ward with high bp and bless dp he tried but I still missed stuff. (I've come home and packed a bag just incase)

Things I found useful:

Mug
Pillow
Dressing gown
Towel
Toiletries
Snacks/fruit/money
Pants
socks
Maxi dress/change of clothes
Book
Ear plugs

MummytoMog · 12/06/2014 14:12

Baby stuff definitely in a bag in the car, with just a couple of nappies and an outfit in your bag - once you're all done, you can send OH out to the car for it. It was such a fag having to move bags around from the assessment room, to the delivery room, to the postnatal ward.
