Fizzy drinks THAT bad?

Ever since I found out I was pregnant I've been eating really really healthily 90% of the time...however, at 14 weeks I still feel dizzy and fatigued a lot of the time which makes going out a pain.
The only thing I've found that helps is full sugar coke or dr pepper- is one can a few times a week really that awful? I feel guilty every time but often it's the only thing that makes me feel normal...

No, it's fine!

chocomochi · 10/06/2014 18:32

I was having one can of full fat coca cola every DAY with DD2 Blush

Addiction to having a can every day lasted almost two years before managing to wean myself!

RAFWife12 · 10/06/2014 18:50

I was advised by my midwife to try fizzy drinks as I wasnt drinking enough. I dont have food aversions - i have fluid aversions. Juice/squash too sweet, water too bland. I'm just awkward.

Boudica1990 · 10/06/2014 18:53

Oh gosh I've been caning the origina like it's soon to be discontinued. Baby actually moves and swirls when I drink it haha it's what I do when I want to encourage him to move.

Its fine.

lucyfluff · 10/06/2014 18:57

No its fine!! Im loving full fat coke at the moment....ice cold Smile

Marnierose · 10/06/2014 19:00

Well I hope not. Coke and cake is all I could tolerate for a very long time.

grocklebox · 10/06/2014 19:02

Are you reading american websites? If so, stop it. They spout an unbelieveable amount of shit about pregnancy.

It's just pregnancy, you're not suddenly some special class of creature. Eat and drink pretty much what you like.

KateTheHuman · 10/06/2014 19:03

I feek tired enough as it is. If I didn't have my can of coke in the morning I'd never make it through the day haha

puthyjip43 · 10/06/2014 19:11

I'm pretty sure it's only the caffiene you need to worry about- coke is very high in caffiene but would only be a prob if your also caning strong coffees too

sleepingdragon · 10/06/2014 19:13

From my experience the only thing to be aware of is what time you drink it. I have found im really sensitive to caffeine during my pregnancy- a strong tea or coke after about 5pm affects my sleep. A few weeks ago I was out with friends for a dinner and one coke between about 8 and 9ish left me wide awake till after 3 in the morning.

strawberryjam · 10/06/2014 19:17

200mg caffiene a day is your limit. Coke has 40mg. I would not worry. I have needed ice cold coke in this pregnancy even though it coats my teeth and have needed to clean them straight afterwards!

somedizzywhore1804 · 10/06/2014 19:18

You can have 200mg of caffeine a day and a can of coke has 32mg in. I'm 36 weeks and I've been having a can a day as I've had loads of food and drink aversions after suffering HG and it perks me up.

somedizzywhore1804 · 10/06/2014 19:18

Cross post strawberry.

Buttercup27 · 10/06/2014 19:19

Try the full fat caffeine free coke it was a life saver when I was pregnant. The only liquid I could keep down for weeks. It tastes no different to the normal coke without the caffeine.

squizita · 10/06/2014 19:35

My MW recommended it for when I felt sick!

So long as you don't go Ott on the caffeine, and brush those teeth (enamel softens in pregnancy) why not?

The foetus generally takes what it wants and leaves what is doesn't (maybe on the thighs if you're like me lol) ... Provided you eat normally, a daily treat like a fizzy drink is no big deal!

My sin is sweet pastry and decaff mocha frappacinos... Actually probably fattier than coke!

grocklebox · 10/06/2014 19:41

200mg is just some arbitrary number gleaned from one guideline. Different countries guidelines will tell you half that or double that. It's effectively meaningless.

Nocomet · 10/06/2014 20:01

There is a reason Coke is so successful ans it's not just advertising.

It's just the right about sweet to give you a sugar kick, but not so sweet as not to be refreshing.

It doesnt make you feel sick like squash or acidic juice does, so its great for PG sickness, after D&v bugs and similar.

Coke and crisps are the treatment for feeling shakey from too much sun or after holiday food poisoning.

Coke and crisps isn't far off rehydration salts and tastes much nicer.

Nocomet · 10/06/2014 20:03

And coke and a mars bar was the obly way to survive a school cycling trip.

Our teacher liked hills!

MrsMonkeyBear · 10/06/2014 20:18

I think my dd will be born orange from the amount of irn bru I've drunk. Its the only drink other than hot drinks I can stand. I will have the odd coke or dr pepper but it just doesn't feel right.

LadyNexus · 10/06/2014 20:19

My midwife told me that caffeine can cause all kinds of problems, miscarriage etc. but I think you have to be having a lot.

I'm not sure how much is in coke?

porcito · 10/06/2014 21:45

The Coke website even has a calculator to work how many 'is safe' to drink. I think it comes up as about 6 per day when pregnant. But as someone else said, some countries tell you a higher allowance, some less; it is kind of an arbitrary number. I've had coffee and coke throughout as if I'm giving up wine, it's the only way I would have kept sane.

The research into caffeine seems to have 2 flaws regarding amounts from what I've read (1) for ethical reasons, you can't just force healthy women to drink loads of coffee when pregnant (of course), hence some of the women needing/wanting caffeine may have had other risk factors (shift work, underlying illness or age) making them need more (2) they reported what caffeine they took in - so gaps for human error. "3 cups" from a shop where they do double shots as standard would be more than 3 from home made, espresso-based Italian coffee is stronger than filter etc'.

The NHS took this into account to some extent so say have about 2 cups a day or 3 of tea (pretty average amount) - whereas in America some coffee shops won't serve you FFS!
