Smear test while pregnant.

I'm 20 weeks pregnant with my second child, never had a smear test.

Before I fell pregnant was getting bad discharge and stomach pain. Was referred to a gynaecologist.

I then found out I was pregnant and never went. I've started to get smelly discharge again.

Had my first child at 21.
I'm now 24 and wondering if I should request a smear test to put my mind at ease, more for what was happening before I fell pregnant.

Go to your gp I doubt you need a smear more likely some antibiotics x

They won't do a smear test if you're pregnant, it's considered too risky.

You should obviously get the smelly discharge checked out (it could be an infection) but you can't have a smear until after you've given birth.

I think you should go back to your GP and talk through your symptoms. I know that routine smear tests aren't meant to be done while you are pregnant or for a few months afterwards, but I'm not sure what they would do if they were investigating a specific problem (rather than just routine screening).

I was under the impression that a smear test is only offerd to over 25's. I'm due mine now but the Midwife said it'll be done after I've had my boy.

If you are worried about discharge, speak to your midwife or GP so they can so some swabs

As others have said, they won't do smears usually if you are pregnant in this country. In any event the things that cause an abnormal smear don't cause smelly discharge. You should see you dr for that anyway.

Marnierose · 10/06/2014 06:49

In some situations they will do a smear test. So worth asking.

CPtart · 10/06/2014 07:01

A high vaginal swab is needed to rule out infection not a smear. The hormones of pregnancy can alter the cervical cells and skew the results.

CPtart · 10/06/2014 07:02

....smears are also not done until 3 months after birth either for this reason.

squizita · 10/06/2014 07:56

A smear test isn't 'risky' but you can end up with inconclusive results, so they don't bother doing them unless there are clear issues: they are more likely to send you to the colcoscopy clinic for a look up there with some dye (if it's serious enough for that urgency, and they've ruled out other things). I got my smear reminded the same day as my BFP so rang them and they cancelled it until afterwards.

However it sounds like an infection not anything you'd need a smear for? Still go to your GP, they can swab you.

weebairn · 10/06/2014 07:58

I would see your GP about the smelly discharge so they can investigate.

Routine screening for under 25s is not recommended in this country, but they would do one for someone with symptoms. However they are not accurate in pregnancy as the previous poster says. They will take swabs and so on depending on your history though.

For the record, I accidentally had a smear test at about 4 weeks pregnant a few years ago!

LBNM19 · 10/06/2014 08:26

I already had a few test for infection and STD a few months ago that were clear.

But I suppose having it done again for infection may help, I'm suffering from severe health anxiety whilst pregnant and now think

*thinking I should of had a smear before to rule out abnormalities.
