Rib pain.. Ridiculously painful.. Is it normal when it hurts that bad?

I've read on here / google that right rib pain is normal in pregnancy, but to what extent? I'm in serious pain, feels like my ribs are going to burst out of my chest and the skin on the rib area, just the right side, feels so sore, like it's been burnt, but looks normal.
If I lay down it hurts, when I try to get up it kills and actually takes my breath away. I've tried sitting various ways, standing, laying, arms up, arms down, hunched over, straight etc and nothing helps. Have tried paracetamol and still hurts. The bursting out of my chest pain is not all day, will just come on suddenly but the skin stays sore all the time. I try to get up and when it hurts that bad I just stop trying and stay where I am. Is this normal?

How many weeks are you? I would suggest going to the doctors and maybe asking for some anti-inflammatories and/or being referred to a pysio.

Is the pain just on the right side or do you mean the pain is both sides but skin soreness only on the right? Rib pain is unfortunately normal as they're being pushed outwards. However if it's just on the right please get checked out as it can be a sign of HELLP syndrome, a rare but life-threatening form of pre-eclampsia.

Sorry, am 33 weeks Thursday. All pain is one side, the sore and the bursting feeling. I had a midwife appointment Tuesday and mentioned it and she just said its normal. It's just so incredibly sore.

Im 31 weeks and I get this, turns.out it was my little.ones position and he was practically attempting to leg press my rib cage :( it hurt so much I thought my ribcage was going to break at one point!!

I would still see a gp about it or phone the midwife and explain you feel it's a little more than normal pain.

I had this with one of mine. Very similar to Boudica1990, he was back to back and wedging his feet in my ribs. I was xrayed at about 37 weeks to see if he'd broken them, due to the amount of pain I was in. Fortunately, they weren't but the left side of my rib cage is definitely still wonky a decade later.

Hope it improves for you Hobby!

Sorry I hope I haven't worried you. If you've no other symptoms of PE then chances are everything is fine. My friend nearly died from this condition though, she'd spent a couple of weeks putting up with the pain because she was told by a nurse that it's normal. Within 2 hours of being diagnosed she was in theatre having a c-section. If in doubt it's always worth getting something checked out.

I had agony from my ribs as baby breech and head wedged under my rib

Hobby2014 · 09/06/2014 20:24

Midwife said it's probably just baby's bum, and it might be. I just wake up continuously during the night, with it hurting, then try to turn over or move and it's so painful.
When I've had the baby I'm sure I'll look back and say it was nothing compared to childbirth!
No not worried me, I'd rather hear all opinions. Thanks. I've got a nasty cold this week and have had quite a few headaches this week but in general I've had a pretty healthy pregnancy. Im not sure if the headaches are to do with the weather and maybe I'm not drinking enough water in this warmth. I don't know. I just don't know if I can take another 9 weeks of this if I go overdue and it doesn't stop!

I've had rib pain (right side - both the burning sensation on skin at front just below ribs and general ache and pain around whole right rib cage to back) since early pregnancy. Midwife was unconcerned. Physio said ask the midwife! The best explanation i've had so far was from a yoga teacher who said that for first pregnancies your uterus is pear shaped and lies diagonally attached at the top right below your rib cage (becomes more apple shaped with subsequent pregnancies apparently ). Hence the pressure on the right.
I basically couldn't sleep onmy right til the last couple of weeks (am 37 wks now) and still have to stick a cushion under ribs to keep baby out...as he's got bigger i am now fighting his feet which are determined to get in under the ribs! I find lying on the left generally makes him drop to the other side ire stretching right arm up and back helps.
When i had the general pain on side and back ribs i would lie/sleep with a hot water bottle under my armpit which helped. Good luck!

I've tried sleeping on that side, I think I read it can help, but it hurts more I think so in finding I sleep on the other side more, so that makes sense. Although I find myself just taking it turns on what side to lay on.
