what are they testing for?
I had protein, high blood pressure and oedema at 36 and had to go into hospital for observation as it was hypertension/ borderline pre-eclamsia.

coderoo · 04/09/2006 15:30

no i had that
i htink it was a one off

cupcakes · 04/09/2006 15:30

you can often tell if you have an infection - you have to pee more frequently and it stings.

madmarchhare · 04/09/2006 15:30

I often had keytones present when I was pg. I had hyperemesis and wasnt eating properly. I believe that is one of the reasons keyones could be there.

nailpolish · 04/09/2006 15:31

I had ketones in my urine when i was pg all the time

its usually just a sign you havent eaten in a while

i used to get mine tested in the morning, mw would tell me off for skipping breakfast

protein is a bit more serious, can be a sign of pre-eclamplsia, do you have high bp, oedema ?

urine tests can be done on the spot, did mw test it before she sent it off?

they should tell you either way, if you dont hear give her a ring

If you have protein it could have come from one of two places. Your kidneys not working properly (bad: sign of possible pre-eclampsia. In non-pregnant people sign of kidney trouble). It can also come from your sample not being very sterile (i.e. catching gunk on the way 'out of you'). IYSWIM women's sample quite prone this - men's are not. They send it off to the lab to find out what kind of protein it is.

Ketones - I think that that is a sign of dehydration, isn't it?

Else - do you have a suspected infection of urinary tract?

Lokely to be about a week for results - but if you showed a strong reading you'd be under some kind of treatment anyway.

How pregnant are you?

Kif, that was interesting what you wrote about the sample not being sterile. Could having sex the night before possibly mean that protein is in the urine sample (from sperm?)
I had a small trace of protein in my urine at my last appointment (37 weeks). I was worried, because I know of pre-eclampsia. The midwife was not concerned at all, but quizzed me in detail about what I had been eating that week, and it turns out that I had been eating a lot of salty stuff. She said that could put strain on your kidneys and ends up showing traces of protein. She gave me reccomendations about how to cut down the salt, and well have a look again at the end of this week. Im in Japan, and the midwife really believes you can significantly manage the outcome of your pregnancy by diet.

I hope it works, I`ll find out at the end of the week.

a trace of protein is more likely to come from vaginal discharge being caught up in your urine sample. I had ketones in my urine a couple of times in my last pregnancy - it is when your body runs out of glucose and starts to break down fats - most likely because you havent been eating much than any other problem

Hi I am 17 weeks pregnant and 37 years old, this will be my 3rd baby, i was told 2 years ago i couldn't have any more children, so great shock when i found out i was pregnant, i had been trying for 6 years. When i was only just over 12 weeks gone i got rushed in to hospital with a threatend miscarriage, as i woke up at 4am covered in blood. Then i went down to my midwife for a normal check up yesterday and then found out i had ketones in my urine, i have done a lot of research on the net today and i think it has shed some light on why i am so tired all of the time and as i am so tired i don't eat as well as i should. I thought it was because i work really horrible hours at work 03.00-12.00 and my pratt of a manager says "you have to do it for the needs of the business"I can't wait till my maternity leave in June they think i'm going back yeah right!!!!

Don't know if this helps, but I had protein and keytones present in my urine last week - 36 weeks - and the midwife wasn't concerned about it at all. She put the keytones down to not eating enough and as I hadn't had any protein in my urine throughout my pregnancy, she didn't think it was a cause for concern. Anyway, urine back to normal this week.
