i had mine booked but canceled it twice. i had it test in my last pregnany and was ok. only reason they test me is because my mum had it slightly in 1 of her pregnancies. i just hated it and sugar never shown up in my blood or urine so surely i'm not being that stupis by not going.
I am 34 + 3 now aswell and baby normal size!!

I had it in my first pg and was fine.

I had it in my second and had gestational diabetes.

DS2 measured small for dates throughout my pregnancy, but was born at 8lb 1oz (DS1 was 8lb 10oz).

I did feel lousy before I had my GTT with DS2. I'm very glad I had it.

please don't ignore it if it is being offered to you. I had it large baby etc didn't have GD but did have impaired tolerance and they monitored ds for the rest of my pregnancy and my blood sugars. I least then I had some control over it.

WigWamBam · 04/09/2006 15:41

Don't make the mistake of thinking that because your urine doesn't show glucose you don't have GD. I had to have a GTT purely because of my size - no symptoms, nothing at all - and had GD ... not once did glucose show in my urine.

IMO, if your mother had GD then they are sensible to suggest you have the test done. Uncontrolled GD can be harmful to the baby - if there's a problem then it can be controlled and the risk to the baby minimised.

Hmmm, my mom had GD in her last pregnancy (undiagnosed - I base my diagnosis on my sister's weight and my parents' description of how she looked, at birth), but she was always big and never healthy.

I had a GTT with DS1, it was reasonably good. With DS2, I didn't bother with a GTT, as I felt well, and was a bit lighter and healthier than with DS2.

If you feel ok, I'd be ok about skipping the GTT - then again, a friend of mine says GD isn't a real disease anyway (e.g. no treatment etc needed), and as I've never experienced it, I'm probably missing something.

poptot · 04/09/2006 15:53

Sorry to butt in again and don't want to be the voice of doom but GD IS a disease and if it goes undiagnosed it can be harmful. That's why they monitor you. A colleague of mine lost a baby at 37 weeks with GD because it was undiagnosed and she wasn't monitored. Please if there's any doubt get it checked. It's such a small test.

mmmmchocolate · 04/09/2006 15:55

god now i am worried. but no one would of picked up on it unless i said something!!! and my mum only mentioned it in passing.

surely it ould show in my blood tests?

I'd think it would show up in your bloods, and also you'd probably have other symptoms, surely?

I thought the GTT tested whether you were close to having GD, and was more sensitive than usual blood tests.

Blimey, NQC, I'd like to have met your friend when I was pg and had GD! I have never felt as appalling as I did before I was diagnosed.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/09/2006 16:07

Hmm, I'll have to ask her more about it.

What sort of treatment did you get for your GD, once you were diagnosed? Was it diet stuff, or were there drugs as well?

WigWamBam · 04/09/2006 19:15

I'd take issue with it not being a proper illness - it's "proper" diabetes, it just happens to be triggered by pregnancy. Often it's treated by diet, but usually insulin is needed at some point.

Mine was controlled pretty well by diet, but dh's cousin had it badly during all three pregnancies and ended up having an insulin drip throughout labour, as otherwise there could have been implications for the babies. Usually GD goes away after delivery but hers didn't, and she is still insulin dependant 8 years later.

Diabetic and GD pregnancies are monitored very closely for good reason; there really is a risk that there could be problems with the baby both before and after delivery.

Have a look at this for more information.

hunkermunker · 04/09/2006 19:26

Mine was diet controlled (no white flour/white rice/white pasta, no sugar, etc) - the difference was incredible. I was choking with thirst, waking up many times (once I finally got to sleep...) to drink several pints of water each night.

Had I not been able to control it by diet (and I tested my sugar levels each day, several times), I'd have had insulin. I'm really surprised anyone denies GD exists!

hunkermunker · 04/09/2006 19:27

Oh, and DS2's sugar levels were affected post-birth too. Remember my "midwife says Hunker has to give formula top-ups to her newborn" thread?!

WigWamBam · 04/09/2006 19:39

I remember that thread ... brought back memories of my own rather violent response (normally placid and compliant WWB turned into raging she-devil) when dd was born with low blood sugar and the paediatrician insisted she was force-fed formula every two hours

cleaninglady · 04/09/2006 20:23

i had gd with my ds (2nd child) cant beleive that someone would think its not a real illness and it can be very dangerous for the baby as can completely over develop some internal organs and if it appears earlier in pregnancy can damage the development - i had to have elective cs 3 weeks early as my ds was getting to large - 8lb 12oz at 37 weeks controlled mine with diet but had insulin for last 2 weeks as well - no symptoms or protein by the way - just my size

millysimmons · 05/09/2006 10:26

Sorry going to butt in........
GD is a real illness & effects the newborn. I was tested for it- due to size of baby but it was negative. Dont want to frighten any of you but my friend had it, had planned c-section for 37wks, spent wks 35-37 in hospital as so ill with it. Babe was born, lost lots & weight & mother & baby are still in hospital 10 days post birth.
Dont want to scare you or sound harse but it worth exploring- No the drink is not nice but whats a nasty drink with all else us women go through!!!!!!
