I loved a cup/bowl/spoon set to save for later. Hotel chocolat do a 'new mother' box of chocs. A Lamaze toy. Muslins. Some clothes in size 3-6 months or above. A nice book, like Guess How Much I Love You.

A little something for mum, dad and baby would be nice. Maybe try find out if there is anything she hasn't bought yet?

Chocolate, wine, bath things, nice lip balm or hand cream, homemade biscuits or posh coffee(handy to offer to all the visitors), new pyjamas, a pretty bracelet, maybe a voucher for a massage/pedicure?

Maybe a pack of nappies, wipes, cotton wool, baby shampoo etc. A baby grow or a cute outfit, a teether or small teddy. (BTW, I found that nearly everybody brought clothes in either newborn or 0-3months, which my boys grew out of nearly before we had a chance to try them all out! So think about buying a few sizes up) Think about blankets, a photo frame or baby book, a little keepsake box.

Beer, a take-away voucher, a book? Some ear plugs for a joke!

This is a lot of effort, but one of my friends made me a canvas picture she made herself of cut-outs from magazines and photos of us throughout the years. Was really thoughtful, and was by far my favourite present, probably just because it was so personal.

I think the posts above have just about covered everything but just wanted to say what a lovely friend you are to put in this much thought and effort with your gift. I'm sure your friend will love it whatever you include. I second the babysitting voucher or maybe a voucher for beauty treatment such as a facial or pedicure (as I'm 38 weeks pregnant and can't comfortably reach my own feet!)

theborrower · 09/06/2014 15:56

What a lovely idea. There are some great ideas above, so it's mostly covered.

Here's my ideas:

for the parents - nice hand cream (because you wash your hands a million times a day), chocolates (you need the energy and a treat), a
mini bottle of fizz (so they can have a glass each to celebrate, but they'll never get through a whole bottle on their own, especially if she's BFing), a beer for Dad,

for baby - a book or two for baby (because no one else gives these things), a wee toy that's bright and crackles etc (because everyone else will give white soft toys), and lots of 'disposable' things like wipes, bubble bath, calpol etc as they will get used.
