The best way to preserve scan pictures?

We keep ours in a photo album, but they are fading already, is there a good way to preserve them?
Or alternatively is it worth getting them scanned at a printers and having digital copies?

Scan them, then you can print fresh copies

I've scanned mine and had photos printed.

NEVER laminate them.

ditto HM. The photos are lovely. I keep the originals in a safe place.

Oh no,what happens if you laminate them?
I've asked my friend to laminate the ones I have of Ds-I hope she hasn't done them yet!

hunkermunker · 04/09/2006 17:14

They'll vanish - DO NOT laminate them. They're printed using heat-sensitive paper, so laminating them will destroy them. Ring her NOW!

I've scanned mine and tried to print, but the printer (not mine) seems to want to enlarge it to 4x6 and so makes each image all fuzzy....any advice for technically incompetent!?!

bonkerz · 04/09/2006 18:32

i used the sticky back stuff you cover books in and so far they are fine and DS is now 6!!!

Take a photo of it with a digital camera the print it yourself. Keep the original in hard back book away from the light and look at it every so often, but don't frame it cos it'll fade.

i used my digital camera to take a photo of them (in a close-up mode) and they turned out really well, so i now have a more permanent record.

My oldest scan picture is now 10 and a half years old and it is fine - not really faded at all I think. I carried it around with me for the pregnancy but then since then, it has been in a hardback book, not really exposed to any light.

Thanks for al the help, my DH's sister who is a radiographer has told us that recent scan pictures are not so sensitive so should last even if in a frame, but it's best to keep them somewhere dark.
DH has done some great digital photos of them though, so we have those.
I'm thinking maybe the plastic in the photo album has rubbed some of the ink away and that is why they are fading?

I'm sorting out my unit and computer cupboard, looking through the photo albums, I came across my 10 year old scans, I think they're too far gone to be saved. Surely there must be some specialist that can bring them back to life? It's a shame that hospitals don't archive them. 😟
