I have a systemic problem with the valves in my body - mitral valve prolapse and also (I don't know the name of the valve) the one between the oesophagus and the windpipe, which means that I occasionally - if I am not careful - aspirate liquids or foods when I drink.

The problem with this valve seems to have become a lot worse during pregnancy. Even swallowing normally means I sometimes cough and splutter because something has gone down the wrong way. I don't know if it's because of indigestion or pressure on the diaphragm or something.

My DH was hurrying me out of the house on Sunday morning while I was drinking and I took a gulp of water, some of which I choked on. Since then I have had this heaviness in my chest which feels like a chest infection now. No pain or anything, just heaviness, and clearing my lungs/coughing will not shift it. We have to get on a plane this afternoon and I am worried this is going to get worse. Plus considering I am pregnant, I can't just take the medication I would normally take to deal with it.

What would you do?

I think you should see your GP, it sounds like you've aspirated some water. Reflux meds on prescription may help with some protection as well as keeping food and drink down. I take it you mean your epiglottis? Which sits over both and closes when you swallow to stop food going down your airway? Can you get an emergency appointment?
