Talk some sense into me about dopplers...

Am 8+6 - healthy scan at 6+1 and then 7+1 (strong heartbeat, grown exactly right).

In my stupidity, I have been reading about women hearing heartbeats on home dopplers at 8weeks (one woman claimed she'd heard it at 5+5 Hmm).

All I can hear is the placenta.

That's ok right? It's normal not to be able to hear a heartbeat right now correct? Please talk some sense into me.

I think it can be tricky for experienced midwives to find the heartbeat with a doppler at 16weeks.
Back away from the doppler, I'm sure all is fine.

Try not to stress (Easier said than done). It would be really early to hear anything as the baby is so small try.

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg · 02/06/2014 19:02

Most midwives won't even try and listen until 16 weeks. Step away from the doppler.Smile

I heard mine from 9 weeks but it took aaaaaaaaaages to find it. It is quite easy to tell the sounds of your own heartbeat from the baby - baby will be about twice as fast. At 9 weeks the hb is right down by the public bone.

I used the Doppler when I needed reassurance as have had several mc's.

Unless you are über paranoid ( like me) it is probably best left till a bit later on.

Ok - 16wks has reassured me! That's quite a lot bigger than now...

Have another scan booked for two weeks time so will try to hang on until then...

agree with everyone.

at that stage the baby is literally the size of a kidney bean so its no surprise it would be difficult/impossible to find, given that midwives can struggle at 16 weeks.

squizita · 02/06/2014 19:21

I've just had my 24 week and my MW warned the trainee she might not find mine! The HB came and went when she first tried even though you could see little grumpy kicks on my belly. After it was re-positioned it was easier to hear.

So don't worry, give it a few more weeks yet! :)

I only just found my babies heartbeat at 19 weeks xx

Upsetwithfriend · 02/06/2014 20:08

Just don't rely on the doppler for 'reassurance', especially in later stages. A baby's heartbeat is not indicative of fetal health.

Even a very experienced midwife can mistake a mother's heartbeat for a baby's, when mother is panicked, and baby has died.

Snook99 · 02/06/2014 20:46

I felt like this and got some quite rude responses when I posted on here, but I didn't hear hay thing till about 10+ weeks so don't panic, all you can hear is your heart beat (in loads of places) and placenta. I'm now 17+1 and can hear and find it easily most of the time, so don't stress and try not to rely on it x

Sweetpea86 · 02/06/2014 21:02

Mixed views on them I know I asked same question when I was preg. I got one in the end because never heard heart beats at midwife app or scans. They justs never let me listen. I got one around 16 weeks but didn't work until 20 weeks.

I got it as a fun thing a way to bond, please don't get one if you feel it will cause you stress. I payed 20 off amazon and I have to admit it was good. I miss that sound but I have my little angel snoozing in his cot as I type.

Only use it if baby is really active if baby is quite please don't as u will stress out,

I know lots of people will tell you not to get one. And I wouldn't get one so early on maybe around the 20 weeks mark

Congratulations on your pregnancy

DH has been given the doppler to be hidden away along with the pregnancy tests I gave him after I took three ten over the course of two days....

Some good advice here. It's just such a temptation but I am one of the people who will obsess over it, so I think it's probably best avoided.

I got my doppler at 9 weeks, watched all the videos and spent hours tryna find the heartbeat and never found it until 12 weeks, I later found out I have an anterior placenta so I have no idea if that affected it somehow. I think it just varies from woman to woman so don't panic! I'd put it away and try again after ur 12 week scan!
