Been feeling ill for over a week, went to the doctors and she said I have tonsillitis.

She prescribed phenoxymethylpenicillin, got them home the leaflet says do not take when pregnant, trying to conceive, breast feeding Etc.

The NHS website says they are not known to be safe during pregnancy and should only be taken if completley necessary.

I've spoken to two different doctors who have assured me they are safe but I just still feel like I'm not prepared to take them.

I'm still feeling unwell but thinking maybe I should wait a few days and still how they go.

What would you do?

Personally, I would try and go without if possible x

grocklebox · 02/06/2014 18:35

Take it. ALL medicines say that on the leaflet, every single one. If drs have said its fine, just take it, don't be a martyr.

Penicillin (which is effectively what this is) is safe in pregnancy. It is commonly prescribed to women with all manner of problems. If you read up on the vast majority of medication they will say something similar just because tests haven't been done on pregnant women. If your doctor feels your tonsillitis is serious enough to need antibiotics (they don't always give them so they must be significantly worried) then I would suggest taking it as tonsillitis can get nasty quickly and can also cause problems with eating and drinking which is obviously not ideal in pregnancy.

Donkle · 02/06/2014 18:42

Most things say this as pregnant women cannot be tested on and so they can't get a licence to advertise safety, it doesn't mean they're not safe.

If your doctor has given them to you it's because you're worse off without them and if you are baby is. Please trust your doctor and not google. I have been on a host of antibiotics and pain killers since I got my BFP for UTIS.

You do not want this to get worse or to get a temperature, PLEASE DO NOT 'HOLD OUT'.

Seriously, trust your doctor and with all due respect to the amazing advice of women on here - not someone who isn't qualified, experienced or familiar with the drug.

I would take them. You will need a whole load more of antibiotics if and get more poorly if you don't get on top of this.

RAFWife12 · 02/06/2014 19:45

The risks to you and baby from an untreated infection are far higher than the risks of penicillin.
As others have said - ALL medications will say on the patient information leaflet not to be taken in pregnancy. They are covering themselves. It's highly unethical to do clinical trials on pregnant women. Dr's will prescribe certain medications because they have not been proven to be unsafe (thousands of women will have taken them in pregnancy and not had any problems). It's a risk/benefit situation. Penicillin has been around for so long, if there was a problem then we would know about it.

Another example... the medication that keeps my placenta functioning is covered in warnings about not using during pregnancy. Grin It was prescribed (as it is routinely, having saved 1000s of babies over the last decade) by a well known ob/gyn at a teaching hospital.

If the Dr says it's OK, most likely it's OK.
