Hi everyone!

Just wondering if anyone has found and answers to this one. I am 17 weeks pregnant with DC1 and was finally feeling more human as morning sickness started to disappear recently. However, over the last few days I seem to have developed heartburn which is driving me mad; it us causing me to throw up after dinner most nights and then wake up again at about 3am to throw up again. Gaviscon is not nuch use so far!

Any ideas please?

Eat more often but less during the day and keep your head raised in bed?

CurlsLDN · 02/06/2014 05:07

Sounds like acid reflux, I had that in pregnancy too, horrible isn't it?

I found that gaviscon actually made me throw up, something to do with the taste/texture. I loved tums, the chewable tablets. They taste like sweets and for me they knocked the acid on the head within a couple of minutes.

Failing that, there is some drug the gp can prescribe, I think it's called ranitidine or something like that

Mynewone · 02/06/2014 05:09

Yes I had this too when expecting dd. what I did lweji said- sleeping more propped up will help. Also I cut out. 'Trigger foods' which for me was tomatoes, anything spicy, fizzy drinks and fruit juices .

I had this with DS, I had to sleep sitting up in the end it got so bad. I found the Rennie tablets worked wonders for me.

You can go to your GP and get a prescription though, my sympathies are with you it's horrible.

Urgh sounds terrible.

I was unable to take gaviscon as I'd gag, and my hg lasted the entire pregnancy.

For heartburn I took something called magnesium tricilicate (sp). It's the cheap gaviscon the hosp gave me and it is really liquidy. Easy to swallow. I also lifted my bed up high at the top so I slept on a slant.

barmybunting · 02/06/2014 06:41

Thanks, I will give these a go! I have given up and phoned in sick today after being up since 2am and throwing up every half an hour because I can't stop myself being sick. A great start back after half term but oh well! It could well be acid reflux actually, that makes sense. I think I am going to try the gp today as I can't manage this very well with work. Goodness knows how those of you with hg manage, I admire you!

Oh hun...ive had this pretty much from 15 weeks (now 33)

Nothing works for me other than throwing the acid up. If you find a cure please please please let me know Smile

Thegreatunslept · 02/06/2014 07:05

I had bad heartburn from 22weeks until I have birth and was drinking gaviscon by the bottle.
My gp suggested peppermint tea so after every meal I had a cup of peppermint tea and found it helped a lot I was not having to take as much gaviscon.
Have u tried the liquid and the tablets for heartburn?
I could only take the liquid the tablets did nothing to help me but a friend was the opposite.

Kels13 · 02/06/2014 07:21

I'm the same as thegreatun, only the liquid sorts me out. I had awful sickness until 18 weeks when I tried Gaviscon Advanced. It helped and I feel almost human again.

barmybunting · 02/06/2014 08:11

Thanks thegreatgun. I have tried both but neither seem to work- I can't keep anything down basically so I am not sure the liquid or tablets are getting a chance to work.

I have got a gp appointment this morning so I will see what they suggest. It seems a really stupid reason to go in but I feel horrendous so feel like I need to do something!

Southderby, that sounds horrific! How on earth have you coped for so long?

I currently have this, in second pg, exactly same as first. I would be awake from about 2.30 in agony, sometimes crying from pain and also vomiting. Gaviscon wouldn't touch the pain. Eventually persuaded dr to prescribe omeprazole and it completely disappeared within 3 days. Ranitidine is a similar medicine. You can buy both from a pharmacist too, although they may not want to give them if you are visibly pregnant, although from all the research I have done there is no risk at all.

MsSampson · 02/06/2014 08:16

Barmy - it is absolutely not a stupid reason to see the GP! Having said that it took three visits first time round for them to take me seriously. If you're awake half the night and vomiting that's pretty bad. Good luck at the doctors

GlaikitFizzog · 02/06/2014 08:17

I got a PX for ranitidine when I was pregnant! Amazing stuff.

I also found custard helped a lot!!

Lweji · 02/06/2014 08:19

If it was that bad it could be a bug too.

Get it checked out.

You don't want your child suffering because you can't keep food down.

merlehaggard · 02/06/2014 08:25

It doesn't sound like a stupid reason to see a GP to me. It sounds really horrible. I hope you get it sorted soon. Thanks

barmybunting · 02/06/2014 10:31

Thanks everyone, I am glad you mentioned various things to take as it prompted me to go to the gp. She has given me anti-sickness tablets and something to try to calm the acid reflux. Will get DH to prop up the bed this evening. Thanks for your help!
