I had a 30 wk scan and check up had trace of protein in urine and went to my midwife yesterday and she said I have ++ protein in urine, so will send it away to be tested, meanwhile I am to drink plenty and rest. I have slight blurred vision today, but no other symptons (no swelling) Do you think I should be worried or just rest up?

Rest up or if your worried phone midwife.
Have you got a headache?

Jimjams2 · 02/09/2006 17:03

I'd ring your emergency midwife contact number immediately. Theycan tell you whether to worry or not, but you should not mess with potential pre-eclampsia.

I have no headache and the baby is moving plenty.

trace of protein in urine is exceedingly normal .. I wouldn't worry about it .. am assuming blood pressure is fine too

blurred vision can be down to being tired or headache or even just dry eyes and I wouldn't worry unduly if temporary unless there is a marked / significant change in your vision

I think the 2 symptoms are unconnected but if you are still worried get an optician to do an eye test

Mum2FunkyDude · 02/09/2006 17:07

It could be early onset of pre-eclampsia, if your mw is taking steps in confirming it, I'm sure you will be fine. They will test to see how much protein is present. If it is within normal range you will be monitored as usual. If it is high they will probably class you as high risk and ask you to be monitored more regular to keep your bloodpressure in check.

I had some at the late stage around 39 weeks, but it was not very high, apparently pregnant women sometimes secretes some proteing in the urine (from kidneys).

I hope you will be fine, I'm sure they'll take care of you.

Jimjams2 · 02/09/2006 17:09

do you have any urine sticks at home (sorry I misread as +++ in urine- which I would be concerned about)? I'd still ring someone if my vision remained blurry - even if just NHS direct, or contact the out of hours doctor service and just ask to chat to a doctor.

orangegiraffe · 02/09/2006 17:10

I would phone them for reassurance, the chances are that you will be fine.
I had raised blood pressure and protien in urine throughout pregnancy, I was told to rest and avoid stress.
I agree with jj2, potential pre-eclamsia is highly dangerous.
Good luck with lo

I had the protein symptom and rising blood pressure, diagnosed as pre-eclampsia, at 36 weeks with ds - never got blurred vision but they said that and the headaches vary in that some women get all the symptoms of pre-eclampsia, some only get a couple. Another sign apparently is if your wee gets darker - the nearer coke colour it is the more dangerous. It's very definitely worth calling NHS direct or midwife as pre-eclampsia is not to be ignored and medical staff usually seem to prefer to be overly-cautious about it. It is probably just conincidence that you have two symptoms but better to err on the side of caution!
ps. My ds came through unscathed at 36 weeks, didn't even need a section, they just induced me and let it all progress from there.

ring the midwife! and let us all know how you get on.

Is Mears around tonight - she's a midwife and is good in these situations for advice. is this your 1st pregnancy as pre-eclamptic symptoms can be more likely in your 1st so I've been told. I had ++ protein in wee and lots of swelling at 40 weeks + 3 days and was admitted for monitoring. Just before they were about to induce ds made an entrance all by himself. I would say that unless you are seeing your midwife in the next day or 2 make an appt with your gp or ring the labour ward to see if they would like to look you over.

CountTo10 · 02/09/2006 21:04

Bumping as have spotted Mears!!!

mears · 02/09/2006 21:23

beech - if you have blurred vision then I would contact the local maternity hospital. Swelling is not a first sign of pre-eclampsia so you can't go by that alone. What was your blood pressure like at the clinic? Is it higher than when you first booked?

fussymummy · 02/09/2006 21:43

You should contact GP or labour ward if at all worried.
Did you have blurred vision when you saw your midwife?
She obviously wasn't too worried and has sent urine away to be tested, but if blurred vision has come on since then then seek help.

lemonaid · 02/09/2006 21:50

You've had mears now so don't really need someone else to tell you to call, but I'll do it anyway.
