my nhs area doesn't offer any scans routinely in the third trimester, but the thought of just waiting until 40+ weeks to see if everything is ok seems a little unmanageable...! i'm currently 28 weeks and would love to see my little guy again and for someone to have a quick look to make sure that things are still progressing ok. i just wondered whether people would recommend paying for a private scan for peace of mind or if i should snap out of it and spend that money on something sensible, like nappies!

Depending where you live there is an offer on groupon for 4d scans atm! £49 which I think is really good! Check it out and see if there's any in your area xx

If you can afford it, I'd go for it - I'd have loved to have seen my little one at that point, but we couldn't afford it Sad

I'm having a 4d one next Monday although I'm havimg a growth scan at 34 weeks, I'm so excited and went nuts when I had ds as only had 2 and 4d were so expensive and brand new back then, found sumwhere that will do it for £65 so totally going for it, also my ds wants ro know what his sister looks like

we had a 3d/4d scan at 31 weeks privately but only because it qas on a groupon offer.

since then hav ended up having 2 growth scans at 38 and 39 weeks so hav seen a lot of him!

the 3d was good especially if you can get it on offer...

We had a private well being/growth scan at 32 weeks, it was lovely to have the reassurance that everything fine in there and we also got a quick 4D view at the end with some lovely photos of her face looking straight at the 'camera'

The actual groupon may appear cheap but once they scan you it's then extra for DVD, pictures, CDROM etc etc.. So adds up quite a bit.

A Sonographer colleague recently went for a private growth scan at a baby bond to see what they were like. We were aghast at the "report". It is not a actual medical report you would receive from a hospital and they wouldn't comment on issues with baby, if there were any. My colleague was trying to move herself into better position as the Sonographer was getting terrible pictures. She also wasn't given a choice of pictures. Just given random ones that they picked out.
Beware of companies that don't use HPC recognised and actual ultrasound qualified staff, as they are out there scanning. "Sonographers" that have not worked in the diagnostic field for years and just do bonding / well being scans. there is a reason they are trying to legislate these companies. Ultrasound used at the wrong strength is dangerous.
Rant over but people wouldn't randomly go get an X-ray why subject yourself and your baby to the risks of extra strength ultrasound (which 4d is)

You make good points, poppies. I was planning to go to the fetal medicine centre because I trust them if a problem is revealed. They do a check around 32 weeks which isn't cheap but I do think would be reassuring.
