We spent most of the day clearing out the spare room which will be the nursery. We don't want to spend too much, and we're not in any sort if hurry to get it ready, and expect the baby will be in our room for quite a while, but what do we really need? I haven't really got a clue, other than a cot, rocking chair, chest of drawers... have I missed some thing vital? Changing table? Could really do with a few pointers from some experienced mums please.

I got a cotbed off a friend, new mattress, a bookcase (picked one that matched the living room one so we could use it elsewhere if needed), and a chest of drawers.

We put the change nat on top of the drawers, and hubg a shelf above for hand towels etc. We put a couple of nice baskets on the bookshelf for vests and sleepsuits.

I put an armchair in there from the living room (poang) but she slept throgh from about four months so we moved it back before putting her in there.

Rug, curtains and a bit of bunting and we were done.

She is 2 1/2 now and its all the same except the sides are off the cotbed. She will get a wardrobe this winter, ready for having nursery school uniform that will need hanging.

A changing mat will be fine, you don't need a changing table. Make sure sure that you have a small lamp with a dim bulb for night feeds / nappy changes / checking, and make sure that when you are sitting in the rocking chair, there is somewhere within reach to put a glass of water / bottle of calpol etc. I liked having a CD player / radio in the nursery (for me to listen to during bedtime feeds), and you'll probably need somewhere for a few story books (but bookends on the chest of drawers would be fine).

Change baby on the floor. You'll have to anyway when they are bigger. Although set of drawers tend to come with table on the top. Cot yes but they won't need it immediately if you have a Moses basket

I bought a changing table but never used it. I was too worried about her rolling off it, and it was awkward and too high for me.

I found it easier to place the changing mat on my existing office table and sit on my office chair and change baby. I also gave baby bath on there till about 4 months.

After 4 months I changed her on the bed or on the floor, and baths were in the bathroom.

A rocking chair or nursing chair would be lovely, and a dimmable lamp. As well as a small table next to the nursing chair, that you can easily reach and place water, cup of tea and snacks there.

How about a kids bookshelf to hold books for bedtime stories? Even babies can enjoy choosing books themselves. Worlds apart do various baby friendly ones?

I bough a chairm, put a changing mat on top of the Chet of drawers (perfect height for me end best mat was mamas and papas from Argos others didn't last) I already had a tall boy type thing with large drawers and I store all spare nappies blankets etc in there

Then we got a blackout blind from dunhelm and cot and expedit from ikea. The expedit is great as you can store older clothing (gifts etc) in there and baby food and books etc

Chair not chaim

You don't need a rocking chair (unless it will also fit in your room and you plan to sit in it to bf).

A baby's room needs a cot, a chest or drawers and a changing mat on the floor (or somewhere higher, like on top of the drawers, if you have back problems). If you have space, a chair is nice as you will probably still be doing night feeds when they move in - no particular need for a rocking one though.

It is fine if it is sparingly furnished, there will be toys, books, etc filling the space soon enough...

A cot, drawers and/ or wardrobe, changing mat. Changing mat might fit on top of drawers so you don't need a changing table. We got drawers from Ikea that were designed to fit the mat on the top. I had a rocking chair, because DH bought it me for Christmas before we had DD, but I fed her in our bed mostly until she was many months old. I have spent much of the last 3yrs wishing we had got a dim lamp in there.

We set up dd's room when she was born and at 2 (we) she still uses all of it.
Cot, changing table that has 3 drawers and cupboard space underneath, wardrobe with shelving and hanging space (baskets for the shelves) and a set of shelves.
The changing table still gets used daily and I'll keep it for storage even after we stop using it to change on.
Storage would be my main recommendation.
Also, if I had the room if get a really comfy chair as I've spent way too much time in it!

I'm not experienced but just finished our nursery (ds1 due in August). Our spare room is a 'box room' ie very small bedroom in a flat with a skylight on the ceiling so it's all about conserving space for us! We've got a cot bed (Mamas and Papas Hayworth with a change table over the top and drawer underneath), a chest of drawers and a tall thin cabinet. Our nursing chair is in the lounge which is quite big. We've got some shelves on the wall too and tbh, the size seems perfect. We have a Chicco Next to Me crib which the baby will sleep in in our room to start with and cos it has wheels (and we're in a flat) we can wheel that into the lounge in the daytime.
