Can I do body combat & circuit training now I'm pregnant?

Hi!
I've already got two children and am 5 weeks pregnant with our third. I've been going to the gym regularly since our second was born and love Body combat classes and circuit training classes. Can I do these classes whilst pregnant? Circuits is a lot of weights etc and combat is a mixture of aerobics and boxing (just in case you didn't know which I'm sure you did!) I don't want to risk anything but I still want to exercise.

Are they safe to carry on or should I stick to jogging & swimming now? I've googled it but there's conflicting advice so I'm not sure what to do.

Thanks for your help. Xx

Hi :)
I was a real fitness person before getting pregnant- now 17 weeks. I still
Kept up my classes like body attack ( speak to the instructor who will be able advise you ) because my body is used to it and in the first trimester you can pretty much carry on as much as you feel u r able to, i didnt when the nausea hit me tho so stopped running at 6 weeksish.
Second tri is different though I just do low options and obv no abs , pelvic floor and gentle stretching .
I just started pre natal yoga which I love!
Also swim a bit but find it boring.
Ask class instructors or maybe les mills website?

Speak with the instructor. I continued with body, combats, spin, insanity etc. I also continued with weight training There are things you should avoid (abdominal workouts etc.) but if you have always trained then you should be fine. I workout out as normal up until HG struck me down.

I would also recommend a pulse heart monitor. Just so you can keep an eye on your heart rate. Not medically required but it gave me comfort.

I'm an avid gym a holic, but since I got pregnant (I'm in my 1st trimester) I am so sick and tired, I can't do anything. Once I'm better I will be going back to they gym and doing the lower options like Lisa said. The only class I will have to cut out is Insanity as that is proper hardcore. If you went to the gym before you got pregnant than that's ok. It's if you start when your pregnant which isn't so great - so I've been told x

Hi I'm 21 weeks with dc3 and still attending spin and step classes really enjoying them feel loads better after must be cause of all the sweet stuff I keep eating lol

Just keep going if your used to it, you'll know when to stop or slow down your body will certainly tell you Grin

My friend is a personal trainer and she advised me to avoid my heart rate going much above 140 but in essence you can do any exercise you were doing before pregnancy and let your body tell you what you can and can't do. I'm 24 weeks now. I stopped netball as soon as I found out (I wasn't playing so well and felt I was letting my team down), I stopped tennis at 16 weeks as I was struggling to give my tennis buddies a good match. I still run. I used to run lots, but I had to reduce the intensity and work more on endurance instead. I now do pregnancy yoga, which I think is helping with the pregnancy, but maybe not so much the fitness as such.
I miss really pushing myself and my heart rate - but there is not enough evidence either way to say how safe it is for baby - so I don't want to take the risk. It's probably fine, but obviously it's not something that is ethical to research!

I own a club where Les Mills is taught and Ive just looked through their website thats specifically for owners and theres 's nothing I can find that either encourages or discourages Bodycombat for those who are pregnant. They are generally encouraging a low impact approach to the class. We also run a Circuit class that was choreographed by our instructor and she has pregnant ladies in it but they use light weights, nothing hard core or extreme. The class favoured by the pregnant ladies is Body Balance.

If you like I can email a Les Mills master trainer tomorrow and ask for you.

Thanks everyone!

I think I'll give circuits a miss as a lot of it is abdominal work but carry on with combat and just ask the instructor what I can and can't do next time I go. I'll stop insanity as I think that's too much, I don't want to overdo it.

I really want to keep going as I do enjoy it and think it's better to keep exercising in the long run, and it'll stop me putting on so much weight and looking like a whale!

Thanks again. Xx

Pass its also recommended to keep fit because it helps when in labour. Good luck.

I'm still going to Body Pump (23 weeks). I got a gym plan for the 'other' stuff like cardio because I found after about 15 weeks that I was just crap at the other classes like Attack and Combat. Not much point in going when you can't kick properly or twisting makes something twang in your side!

Now twice a week I walk on a treadmill - uphill for 30 minutes, keeping my heart rate in that whole alleged 'fat burning zone'. Then I do some shoulder and arm weights (part machine, part free), and squats and other leg stuff.

Body Pump Express - 45 minutes - twice a week with no abs at the end.

Swimming another couple of times. I'm going to start yoga on Thursday (but only to meet some other pregnant people - I hate yoga normally) and going to pack in the Pump (just starting to feel pathetic at that too).

For me it is partly about how good the classes made me feel - physically as well as mentally, and at the moment they are starting to make me feel less good about my self - more pathetic. So I'm doing more of my own thing. Still exercising though.

You can still continue with ab work depending on what it is and if you're at risk at all - speak to your instructor. I'm 38+3 and have been doing pilates once or twice a week all the way through, including quite a lot of core work. I'm also still swimming (WONDERFUL in the third trimester when feeling weightless is like a dream Grin) and I go to the gym a couple of times a week and row (though I look a bit like a frog as can no longer get my knees straight in towards my chest lol), go on the X-trainer, bike, treadmill, and do weights. I can't do sessions for as long as I used to, but I definitely feel better for doing them and I'm telling myself hoping and praying that it will make the birth and recovery easier and hopefully get DD evacuated sooner rather than later

doobeedee · 01/06/2014 14:46

I did Body Atrack until 37 weeks. As long as you're used to it and you know your limits you'll be fine. On of the main BA presenters made one of the training vids heavily pregnant but doing lower options!

doobeedee · 01/06/2014 14:47

*Attack

doobeedee · 01/06/2014 14:48

Oh and I did ab work all the way to the end.
