Where did you have your baby(s) and how did you rate the hospital?

Hello - I had both of mine in the Southern General and I had pretty good birth experiences and liked the staff but the levels of cleanliness on the ward was poor! Where are you based? I am in Argyll so a bit of a trek to the hospital!

LieselVonTrapp · 02/09/2006 10:33

Outside Glasgow and had last one in Queen Mothers although I did have the choice of Southern. Had very bad birth. I have heard really good stuff about the Southern General and now wish Id gone there.

I know quite a few people who went to the QM and the stories have not been great. I would definitely go to to SG again and would advise you to do go there next time

fairyfly · 02/09/2006 10:59

Simpsons Memorial and it was wonderful, shut now i'm afraid! I loved it.

trinityrhino · 02/09/2006 10:59

I went to the queen mothers 17 months ago and it was fantastic

QM 2 years ago and PRMH 8 months ago.I had a bad time in the QM too. Birth in PRMH was ok, not what i wanted but medical care was very good.

I found post-natal "care" ( thats a joke ) appalling in both hospitals.

Sorry that's not a very clear asnwer. If I had another baby I dont knwo where i'd go. I woudl love home but they woudl never allow it.....

mears · 02/09/2006 11:17

KristinaM - if you want a homebirth you can have one. No-one can stop you.

mears · 02/09/2006 11:18

Liesel - is Paisley accessible to you?

saltire · 02/09/2006 11:52

Had DS1 in Dr Gray's in Elgin. Fantastic experience, it was 8 years ago so may have changed. Every single midwife in that place was fantastic.

Ds2 on the other hand was born in England in Hinchinbrook in Huntingdon, what an experience that was. The place looked manky, i never saw the same midwife twice, and other factors made for a horrible experience

aitch71 · 02/09/2006 12:00

i loved the Princess Royal Maternity, but then i had some medical issues in pregnancy so i knew that my priority was medical care.

My doctor had a brain the size of a house and every stupid worrying piece of research i took to him he already knew about and had a good non-worrying answer for, so that's why i would go there again as he really gave me peace of mind.

my actual midwife was a wonderful, wonderful woman, knew when to shut up and when to talk, and i felt totally safe under her care. my labour was induced because my waters had broken and i am strep B but she made it as lovely as she could and it was six and a half hours with a tiny tear that didn't need stitches.

I am in the QM area, though, and had early scans done there, they were furious when i moved my care (as i was entitled to do) to the PRM. i had their midwives looking after me when i came home, and they are a bunch of bitches by and large. saw about 15 of them, some were horrible, some incompetent, some bossy... one was nice.

oh, and the PRM was only built three or four years ago and the head of the hosp (my doc) has now been put in charge of all maternity hosps in the Glasgow area. he's a bit of a god, actually.

aitch71 · 02/09/2006 12:01

oh, and it was clean. unlike the QM, which is filthy and has bits falling off the exterior of the building into the carpark, so watch out visitors!

KristinaM · 02/09/2006 22:12

mears - are you at RAI? I'm actually in the catchment for Wishaw but am equidistant from Paisley, Wishaw and the Glasgwo hospitals

sorry I knwo you trained at QMMH

purplemonkeydishwasher · 02/09/2006 22:15

I had my DS in Stirling Royal.
It was pretty good. The midwives were amazing. And everyone was very very helpful with breastfeeding.

phatcat · 02/09/2006 22:22

DS1 - Raigmore Hosp, Inverness, conveyor belt.
DS2 - Broadford Hosp, Skye - fabulous

MrsMuddle · 02/09/2006 22:32

The late great Rutherglen Maternity. I still don't know why they shut it... My sis had a baby 4 weeks ago at the Princess Royal, and was admitted several times during her pregnancy. The actual entrance is a disgrace, but once you get inside it seemed a fantastic place. She was completely happy with the care she got there.

generaldogsbody1 · 02/09/2006 22:37

i had my first at vale of leven mat ward, second at QM.
at vol i had a horrendous time, nearly gave birth on ward, a labour wd midwife came up and heard me pushing and whisked me down to labour ward. i wont go into detail about what else happened
at the QMs (8 months ago) i had a wonderful experience, mws were really supportive etc. I changed my hosps at last minute as i didn't want to go to RAH, had two overnight admissions duringg pregnancy and it wasn't a nice place to be (for me any way)
This time i will go to local cmu at vol as now care can be transferred to QM in an emergency during labour

MrsSpoon · 02/09/2006 22:40

Both at Forth Park in Kirkcaldy. Both births fine apart from a lack of belief that I actually was in advanced enough labour to be admitted to the labour ward both times, nearly had DS2 in the corridor (midwife very nasty to me at the time and told me I could pace the floor all night if I wanted I would only exhaust myself, however she did apologise the next day) they had to put me in a wheelchair and straight in the lift down to the delivery suite.

Found the postnatal care varied hugely, was in with DS1 for 5 days. Help with b/feeding wasn't always available and midwives seemed to vary hugely with their advice and technique. Was also told by one midwife to swaddle DS1, just to press the buzzer next time I needed help and someone would show me how and when I did this I got shouted at by the next midwife that "we didn't swaddle babies"! This was 7.5 years ago so things may have changed, opted for a 6 hour discharge (that actually took 13 hours) after DS2.

ja9 · 02/09/2006 22:53

stirling royal infirm.

i had good experience but wouldn't rave about the services offered....

aitch71 · 02/09/2006 23:10

oooh yes, mrs muddle, the entrance or the PRM is gim, isn't it? why on earth would it have been designed like that?

Alibaldi · 02/09/2006 23:14

Both my ds's at PRM - was Dr. Owen your Dr. by any chance aitch71?? It had just opened two weeks prior to ds1 being born. Fantastic experience both times and excellent care. Wasn't allowed a home birth 'cos of age and being first baby. Although my friend was allowed one in Edinburgh (Trinity) when she was 38!!

expatinscotland · 02/09/2006 23:18

I am not a Scot, but I am married to one and both of my children are. I had them both at ERI, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Good medical experience both times. Excellent, actually. Prompt, professional care. Can't fault it at all in that respect.

BFing not so good first time round but second okay, tho limited, as I went home from the delivery suite.

DD1 born in June, 2003 and I was there for a total of 6 days b/c of complications. DD2 just born in December of last year about 40 minutes after arrival!

expatinscotland · 02/09/2006 23:19

I was offered a home birth in Edin. The midwife who delivered both DD1 and 2 did them regularly.

I was too chicken, but if I'd waited any longer I'd have got one inadvertently.

aitch71 · 02/09/2006 23:25

no, ali, it was a chap called Dr Alan Mathers. there just couldn't have been a better doctor for me, i think. he's a clever person with opinions who likes meeting other clever people with opinions. would never assume just because he's the doc and you're the patient that he knows everything and you don't, iykwim? but he tells terrible jokes.
