Trace of sugar in urine sample, am i wrong to delay retest?

So i had my 25+3 mw appointment today, heartbeat all fine, she tested my urine and there was a trace of sugar showing up. This was at 10am, urine sample taken at 9:30, about 45mins to an hour after i'd had breakfast, crunchy nut clusters mixed with start with milk, no sugar. Now although i don't add sugar to this surely it's still sugary and obviously sugar would show in my urine so soon after eating it, i also had quite a large piece of chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and ice cream for pudding last night (was my 30th) my overweight nan had type 2 diabeties but my was bmi is perfectly healthy pre preg and put on standard weight gain in preg.

Midwife really wants me to come in next Friday for another urine test but I don't work locally and we're a really small set up and it's really awkward with times that she can get in me so i don't want to go plus i feel it pointless as i think todays test was biased.

Am i being silly for ignoring this appointment and just going to my next appointment which is the week after anyway?

Any time I've ever had a trace of sugar, it has always been explained to me that it's because I had recently eaten.

I think there would be a concern if it was glucose +1 - 3

SweetPeaPods · 28/05/2014 14:59

Crunchy not cornflakes always give a positive for sugar. It's most likely the cereal. Could you hand a sample in to your drs if easier just to be sure?

nc060 · 28/05/2014 15:03

I was goingt o suggest just handing it into GP in am or on way home from work?

CaseyRossi · 28/05/2014 15:38

Thanks everyone, i thought as much that it will be the breakfast, from friends and family it seems they do alot to cover their own backs and just end up worring the pregnant person without cause.

I did ask if i could drop it off but she said she'd need to see me to explain things if traces were found again, I made the appointment reluctantly but i think i'll phone her up to cancel the appointment, tell her i'm happy to drop off first thing and she can phone me if a problem. I'll use wee before i eat breakfast or she can just see me the week after.

Glucose should not show in urine at all, regardless of when you eat. Not if you are healthy and have well functioning kidneys. It could be an indicator of gestational diabetes.

FoodieMum3 · 28/05/2014 16:41

But RAFwife, they (midwives and doctors) have told me that that isn't necessarily true of pregnant women. I'm talking about a trace mind, I know they wouldn't be happy with +1 or more.

callamia · 28/05/2014 16:45

Cereal always gave me a trace or +1 at my morning midwife appointment. I had five tests for GD, and none were positive. I switched to porridge - no more sugar in my wee! Stupid cereal.

RAFWife12 · 28/05/2014 16:52

Maybe if you've gorged on sugar, but not with the type of breakfast OP said she had. The kidneys should still filter out enough of the sugar it shouldnt show.
That is why the midwife wants to retest, to check it was a one off and not an indicator of gestational diabetes. It should never be ignored.

AuntieMaggie · 28/05/2014 17:21

I agree you should go back and get checked - the MW wouldn't ask you if it wasn't worth it. And the chocolate pudding shouldn't affect your sample the next day.

SellyMevs · 28/05/2014 17:26

I'd get it checked too.. I've had glucose in my urine since the 1st trimester. It started off as a +1 and now at 28+2, it's regularly a +4. I've had 2 fasting blood tests and 2 GTT'S, with another booked for Friday. Although my bloods are still within normal ranges, they aren't taking any chances and I've been following a GD diet for a few weeks now. If it is the start of gestational diabetes, it's far better to get on top of it early!

hubbahubster · 28/05/2014 17:31

Sorry RAFWife that's nonsense. I regularly had glucose in my wee in my last pg as well as completely clear tests inbetween - it wasn't that my kidneys were functioning one week but not the next! Midwife was never concerned if it was clearly because I'd had sugary cereal or honey on porridge. It had no impact on my baby either.

I agree it should be followed up, but another urine test is surely enough - and an extra appointment if the second test flags any issues. I think your approach is sensible, OP.

RAFWife12 · 28/05/2014 17:56

I never said it shouldnt be another urine test! I completely agree with that. I'm just saying it should never be ignored.

MightilyOats · 29/05/2014 15:15

I'd go with dropping off a urine sample for testing rather than necessarily going in. I agree that you shouldn't have sugar in your urine just because of eating something sugary. I had no risk factors but have GD - mw wasn't too concerned about first lot of sugar in pee, but was second time it happened, so had the GTT. It does have implications so don't ignore it.
