Mouth lips that is! Smile I'm 6 weeks+2 and my lips are so swollen and red, almost feel like I have been stung. Anyone else experienced this and know why it is happening????

Squirrel, that sounds to me more like an allergic reaction to something you've eaten than a pregnancy thing. Do you have hay fever normally?

CoolCat2014 · 29/05/2014 08:36

Agree with the above, sounds like an allergic reaction to me, has it happened before?

Thanks for replying. Never experienced this before, the
only thing that has changed recently is being pregnant for the first time and taking folic acid? Will mention it to the doctor on monday but I woke up a bit like Mick Jagger this morning!!! X

Def sounds like an allergy so go and see your doc. I had a swollen tongue for a couple of weeks in early pregnancy...my midwife(who was generally useless) just shrugged her shoulders...i wish i had been to the doc! Anyhow it passed and never came back...i imagine that was some kind of allergy too probably because there are so many hormonal changes going on. I found a couple of months ago that suncream brought my face out in a rash...that had never happened before. Best to see the Dr so u know what u can take eg. Antihistimines...if it does happen again.

You have definitely come into contact with something new - I did say ingested but it could also be a detergent or a soap or a lip balm..do try and figure out what so you can avoid that completely.

You can take Piriton - the 1 x4hrs one will work better than a daily tablet and you can take quite a few of those a day.

Contact your GP and ask to be referred to a local allergy clinic if possible in the long term. The folic acid, depending on how it's made could be preserved or something using something you're sensitive too - other brands or pregnacare might not have the same issue, so it's worth investigating.

That level of allergy sounds significant and serious - Mick Jagger is not pretty these days - but not like it's anaphylaxis as that's defined as a rapid onset.

OP how are you?

Squirrel31 · 05/06/2014 15:01

Thanks for asking Ismarah. I was going to post an update as I went to GP due to lips scarily starting to flake and had some blood tests. Just got the results and I have very low Iron! Really suprised me as I didn't think of cracked lips being a symptom of Iron deficiency. Me and little shrimp seem to be ok apart from that, have my first booking appointment on Saturday x x x

Good to hear - symptoms are VERY lurgy though..
Low iron is often more dizzy spells and feeling faint, but at least it's easy to sort.

That's weird, I had exactly the same thing after staying in a hotel one night with work. I was pregnant at the time but it was before I tested. I put it down to something in the washing powder in the pillows but I'd never had it before (or since). Went away after 1 day though.
