Would you worry about this? (Toxoplasmosis)

I was playing with my toddler yesterday evening and he was pointing out my eyes, nose, mouth etc. He ended up practically putting his hand in my mouth. It was at this point I noticed that his fingernails were dirty. DH then told me that when he picked him up from nursery they told him how he'd been playing in the outdoors sandpit.

I'm now panicking that he may have toxo on his hands which could have been transferred to my mouth. Would you consider this a concern or just forget about it? (DH thinks not an issue as they would cover the sandpit each night and the nursery is on a business park surrounded by A roads so not likely there are cats anyway).

Advice greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't worry! Your more likely to get it from not washing uour veg properly than this, I would think.

I think if your nursery's sandpits got cat poo in it you've got more to worry about than toxo :S it's probably covered when not in use, but even if not your chances are teeny tiny. I wouldn't worry

Thanks for the replies. I'm one of those hideously anxious people in pregnancy so it's great to get the reassurance

The chances that you haven't already had toxoplasmosis are small. The chance that there is toxoplasmosis in the sandpit is absolutely tiny. The chance of this transferring from your son's fingernails to you is also then very, very tiny indeed. Risk of infection is only something like 5/1000 and even in if you did contract it (which I stress again is highly, highly unlikely), at certain stages of of pregnancy, the risk of transmission to the baby can be as low as 10%. Only around 3 in every 100,000 babies develops congenital toxoplasmosis.

I do understand why you'd worry because that's the natural state in pregnancy, but I genuinely don't think you need to. Smile
