Good news but feeling very nauseous

I went to have a scan yesterday at my local epu and am pleased to say I am 8.5 wks pregnant - baby and heartbeat both visible! This is especially good news as I have had 3 miscarriages.

The only trouble is I feel sick most of the time. I am wearing those travel sickness bands and am trying to eat little but often. I don't know how people cope who actually throw up (at least that has not happened) but any tips for coping? I wouldn't mind if I could just go to bed but I have two very active boys to look after and a very hectic part time job.

Thanks

Ginger is supposed to be good for nausea. Also some homeopathic remedies like nux vomica. I would go to the homeopath to get one tailored for your needs though.

You have my congrats and my sympathy.

Congratulations! But the nausea is horrible isn't it. Mine went on until 19 weeks, but you probably didn't know that.

Ginger definitely worked for me - I either used to make fresh tea (just chop some up, stick on boiling water, add bit of lemon juice and/or honey if you like), or drink Ginger Ale, which really did help, esp in the evenings. Also crisps - a good handful kept it at bay for long enough to eat supper (and actually, now I think about it, some really artificial cheese and onion pretzel things that I couldn't eat now if you paid me).

The other thing - and it's almost impossible if you're working and have kids anyway - is not to get over-tired, that always used to make it worse for me.

But I think it's different for everyone, so you just have to experiment and see what works for you. I know other people here have found acupuncture really good too.

I can tell you what I did, but of course what helps one may not help another. As one who did actually physically throw up, I can confirm that it's absolutely grim. I still can't look at dried apricots even nearly 6 weeks later as having undigested ones come up whole was truly revolting.

Here's what helped me (some of the time):

Ginger and lemon herbal tea
Flat ginger beer
Plain, bland carbohydrates - mashed potato, jacket potatoes, rice cakes, plain boiled rice, noodles, plain digestive or Rich Tea biscuits, plain bread and toast (white, not wholemeal/granary), cream crackers
Ribena if you can't stomach plain water
Baked beans and tinned spaghetti
Cheddar cheese
Tinned tomatoes (the whole ones) on toast
Breaded chicken steaks
Cereal, especially Weetabix

I personally couldn't stomach any fruit or vegetables - even the smell of vegetables cooking made me rush for the loo - and even now I still can't eat red/yellow/green peppers although I'm back to eating everything else.

Hope some of this helps, and that the sickness passes fairly quickly. I was lucky - I only had it badly for two weeks, but that two weeks felt like a lifetime so I know what you're going through.

Congratulations. I found that eating would keep the nausea at bay, but I seemed to be constantly eating chocolate. Chewing gum gave me the feeling that I was eating something, kept my mouth feeling fresh, and didn't involve me actually eating constantly. Hope you find something that works.

I went for my first scan last Thursday and it is really amazing to see the little one move around and to actually see the heartbeat. I just wanted to give you some hope in telling you that my morning sickness past after a week and I have felt fine after that, as long as I don't eat any big meal. Best of luck!!!
