Ate Brie today and now feeling so guilty!

First of all I just completely forgot that I shouldn't have it.

It was in a toasted wrap so and was quite hot so I'm hoping anything nasty will have been killed off.

I can't believe I was so stupid as to forget something so important. If anything happens I will never forgive myself. I'm 7 weeks today. Sad

Also if I got listeriosis would I be able to tell (as in feel sick or one thing)

I'm so paranoid now!

I know exactly how you feel, a couple of months back I ate crab pate without realising I shouldn't and felt so terrible! Try not to worry though, the chances of anything happening are miniscule, particularly if it was toasted, then anything in it would have been killed off, as you said.

meh, Sainsburys sells several types of pasteurised brie if the craving continues.

PotteringAlong · 23/05/2014 16:58

If you get listeriosis you will feel like you are dying.

plantsitter · 23/05/2014 17:00

If you bought it in the uk it was prob pasteurised and therefore fine.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 23/05/2014 17:02

I ate all these things when I was pregnant as we knew no better. Gave birth to two nine pound plus babies.

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 23/05/2014 17:02

It's fine to have it cooked. The risk of Listeria is very small anyway. I believe it makes you pretty ill so am sure you would know.

Please don't say you would never forgive yourself. You can't live completely risk-free. Besides, I miscarried when I followed all the guidelines and have had two healthy pregnancies that were much more relaxed. Plenty of women don't even know they're pregnant at seven weeks and have done all sorts of 'forbidden' things (I had a cocktail binge around that time with my first as I had no idea)!

eurochick · 23/05/2014 17:02

You can have cheeses like that hot anyway. And as others have said, it might well have been pasturised.

DitzyDonkey · 23/05/2014 17:22

Thank you for the kind words and advice! I was half way through when I remembered (obviously I didn't continue eating it when I realised) but I'm really annoyed with myself. It's taken three years and a miscarriage to get to this point so you would think I wouldn't have been so stupid!

SolidGoldBrass · 23/05/2014 17:26

Please don't worry. The risk is tiny of you getting it in the first place and tinier of it doing any harm.

Most of the scare stories about what should be avoided in pregnancy are less to do with public health and much much more to do with misogyny. It's all about policing and controlling women and viewing them as not in charge of their own bodies.

WineSpider · 23/05/2014 17:31

The cooking process would kill any potential bacteria, if there were even any in the first place. You will be fine.

Good lord. You'll be fine. Cooked cheeses are ok anyway, and I'm currently feeding 1 day old DC2 having eaten runny eggs, rare steak and had a few festive proseccos during this pregnancy, if that makes you feel any better ;)

JulesJules · 23/05/2014 19:22

Don't feel guilty Read this article by Zoe Williams and try not to worry, you will be fine.

(And I agree completely with SGB about pregnancy scare tactics being women policing)

tmae · 23/05/2014 19:31

I ate soft goats cheese in a salad at around 7 weeks as I had no idea I was pregnant and was fine, the chances are you and your baby will be absolutely fine, especially as it was hot. Try not to worry as there is nothing you can do and the chances of getting listeria are very low x

Sid77 · 23/05/2014 19:47

Out of interest, does anyone know the food advice given to pregnant French ladies??

PetiteRaleuse · 23/05/2014 19:52

Sid I was told (in France) to wash veg before cooking, not to drink too much, and cook chicken thoroughly. All stuff I do anyway. Not sure what the official guidelines are but some women I know have chosen not to eat cheese or pâté during pregnancies. I ate as normal, but with things like patés bought only from places I trusted to be fresh/hygienic.

PetiteRaleuse · 23/05/2014 19:53

OP you will be fine.

PetiteRaleuse · 23/05/2014 19:57

Just read some french guidelines. They say avoid oysters, sushi, carpaccio, unpasteurised soft cheeses and limit intake of soya.

They also say to be careful with home-made stuff or sold as home-made in case hygiene not up to scratch

Redling · 23/05/2014 20:41

I just see the list of forbidden things is basically stuff that might give you food poisoning rather then being harmful for the baby themselves. I've avoided things but did have scallops once as they were very hot, and cooked goats cheese. I doubt anything from most uk supermarkets isn't pasteurised anyway. Didn't drink at all for ages but last few weeks I'm having a glass or two of wine a week. Pregnancy will be really hard if you feel so guilty all the time, but I know it's very difficult not to worry ! I feel more relaxed the bigger he gets, he's so active I feel he must be a hearty boy!

DitzyDonkey · 23/05/2014 21:18

Thank you all so much, you have put my mind at ease! Smile

Sure you will be fine- Symptoms of listeria here if you are interested www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Listeriosis/Pages/Symptoms.aspx

And all the people who say you can eat brie if it is Pasteurised are wrong- you shouldn't eat mould ripened cheese unless fully cooked (ie bubbling) - it has nothing to do with pasteurised or not
