Help! I had fresh tarragon!

Last night I cooked tarragon chicken and I've only just found out that I shouldn't have eaten it.

It wasn't a huge amount but I did feel odd. I was in a bad position and when I moved it helped.

Did anyone else eat tarragon while 3 weeks pregnant? What happened?

Very worried,

Thank you!

Why can't you eat tarragon?

Leeeleee · 23/05/2014 07:47

It's on many lists of herbs to avoid during pregnancy.

I hadn't known that all herbs were to be avoided.

I've eaten all manner of herbs while pregnant. Just follow the nhs advice on what to avoid.

wrapsuperstar · 23/05/2014 07:50

It's only remotely risky if you are taking it in 'medicinal' amounts, not consuming it as part of a very ordinary meal.

Also, three weeks pregnant? Is that right or a typo? Your baby will be smaller than a poppy seed, quite literally microscopic. At this stage it is very unlikely to be affected by anything you eat or drink, given there isn't even a placenta there yet.

Branleuse · 23/05/2014 07:51

ive never heard of that one. Im sure youll be fine

ThatBloodyWoman · 23/05/2014 07:51

I'd never heard you can't eat tarragon/herbs, and I'm sure I did.

BiscuitCrumb · 23/05/2014 07:54

I didn't know you couldn't wear tarragon when pregnant... I definitely ate herbs Confused.

Don't panic, you're 3 weeks! I didn't know I was pregnant until 7 weeks and I'd had alcohol, pate and salad in bags and what not. Lots of women eat whatever in those warily stages and their babies are fine.

BiscuitCrumb · 23/05/2014 07:55

Wear tarragon? Eat tarragon... Obviously.

Leeeleee · 23/05/2014 07:57

Good to know I can wear it too :P

Seriously, thank you all so much. Clearly I am very new to this and can panic easily.

I really appreciate your replies!

xx

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx#close - it is not on the avoid list so you can calm down

squizita · 23/05/2014 09:33

Please, please follow the NHS guidelines: do not search google.

I say this as someone with former food issues and pregnancy anxiety, I find some websites utterly irresponsible. The herb guidelines would be for huge distilled amounts like you'd get in high-dose pills from Holland & Barratt: NOT culinary amounts.

squizita · 23/05/2014 09:35

...in the UK due to our food hygiene laws, bagged salad/veg is also OK.

Remember a lot of guidelines depend on general food laws (e.g. in the UK many things in supermarkets are pasteurised with very tight dates, tight rules - so we can eat more than the USA and some other countries).

forago · 23/05/2014 09:40

I've never heard this and have 3 DC, the third pg I ate whatever I felt like. it will be fine. alcohol is the only truly dangerous one in my opinion (and drugs of course)

Me23 · 23/05/2014 09:42

The nhs link above is clear and concise, forget google and you will be fine.

BumpNGrind · 23/05/2014 09:48

Please don't spend this precious time worrying, particularly about food. Now is the time to concentrate on making sure you are in the best shape mentally that you can be. Avoid the big things, alcohol, pate and some cheeses but don't spend this precious time worrying.

Good luck

MummytoMog · 23/05/2014 10:46

The only things I avoid are liver and pate (because there's actually a damn good reason not to eat them when pregnant). Everything else, including the odd spot of alchohol, is fine in moderation. You'd be very very unlucky to be one of the tiny number of people in the UK who get listeriosis from soft cheese for example.

Leeeleee · 23/05/2014 11:47

Can't thank you all enough!

I have definitely calmed since this morning and in general am just hugely excited and delirious with glee.

Thanks again for putting my mind at rest :)

Leelee - we've all been there! :)

In my first pg, I was helping my mum clear the overgrown area down at the bottom of her garden before I found out I was pregnant. Once I found out I went into a massive panic about toxoplasmosis due to there being a lot of cats and foxes down there and I hadn't worn gloves.

Within a week I had completely forgotten that this was only a theoretical risk and even if there had been animal urine down there and I had ingested it, it wouldn't necessarily be carrying toxoplasmosis and convinced myself and DP that I HAD TOXOPLASMOSIS. We payed £120 for a private test which was, of course, negative.

Then again at 5 months I was at a wedding in France and had a cheese sandwidch from a patisserie without checking to see if it was pasteurized - immediately convinced I had Listeria until a guest said, hang on, even if you have eaten a piece of unpasteurized cheese, it won't definitely have contained LIsteria and even if it did, you body may have fought off the bacteria and not become infected.

Normal to panic! But mostly no need :)

CONGRATULATIONS!
