sudden withdrawal of progesterone?

Been on progesterone suppositories since BFP. Now 12w 2d. Had nuchal scan today. Last week, ob told me to come off them after nuchal scan (have none left anyway.)

Today he told me I need to take 400mg a day for one week to taper them off. I don't have any and he can't get a prescription to me fast enough.

Can someone reassure me that if I abruptly stop now it's going to be fine? Will I bleed? Will I have withdrawal? Will it cause a miscarriage?

Hi I can't advise you but didn't want to ignore, can you speak to a midwife? Or phone the consultant and ask him what he thinks, also surely there must be some stocks if you should not just stop, I have had problems getting certain meds before and have literally phoned around all local chemists until I got what I needed.

Somebody must gave some, why are they withdrawn? Failing that can you phone the hospital pharmacy? Good luck.

Sorry I misses read your post they have not been withdrawn you need to stop them! However I'm sure you can obtain them.

At this time, your body will me making its own progesterone.

Progesterone essentially prevents bleeds and the breakdown on the placenta. In a loss, whatever causes the loss, progesterone will drop before the bleed (so the jury is out about to what extent losses are caused by low progesterone, as you always get low progesterone with a spontaneous loss). Indeed some experts fear it can mask a potential miscarriage by keeping the placenta in place when the embryo has died, so are reluctant to use it.

Weeks 3-12, the corpus luteus produces the progesterone: some consultants prescribe it (some won't) to those with recurrent MC issues or fertility issues to give everything a helping hand and a boost.
Week 10/11 onwards, the placenta is formed enough to start kicking out the progesterone itself in large amounts - it can keep itself going with no help, it is big enough.

For this reason it's really, really unusual for women to take progesterone throughout pregnancy.
Most women give it up at about 12 weeks, psychologically many find it easier to 'wean' off it, but provided the placenta is big enough it should be fine (I guess the scan showed that).

I came off progesterone at 26 weeks and was fine physically (in the sense no bleeding) but I felt very down and tearful, basically crying all the time about nothing, in the car on the school run and this started about a day or two after stopping and lasted for at least 2 weeks.

All good here pregnancy wise and now 38 wks. Also a lot less emotional but I was a wreck for 2-3 weeks.

Take care

Kath

I just stopped mine at 13w first pg and at 12.5 this pg no ill effects at all, I just stopped.

I just stopped at about 13 weeks I was worried something would happen but it was fine im almost 34 weeks now, was nice not to have the mess anymore!

In my case the pregnancy was clearly non viable as the miscarriage occurred while I was on progesterone. Hope that is of comfort (as in - if it's not a strong pregnancy nothing will help anyway; it most certainly didn't mask a MC).
