Bleeding in 8th week & early scan

Hi All

I am really scared and worried this is it and my baby won't survive.

I've started some dark brown/red bleeding - yesterday it was dark brown spotting - ended up in A&E as so scared, they checked me, did blood tests and gyno check and all OK (even cervix closed) apart from that blood!! I definitely had more cramping yesterday than today.
I've been to Early Scan and I saw my baby's heart beat - all looking OK apparently. I'm not sure what to think.
I was also told I'm actually 5+6 weeks pregnant and not 7+2!! I honestly don't know how is that possible but hey - it's nature, right?? I don't think I've miscalculated as I wrote down when my period started which was April 1st!! Not sure how that works and I'm concerned that if she was able to see heart beat, my calculations are OK but my baby is not developing well (growing well) hence her calculations.
That's why I'm so worried miscarriage has started!!!
I was told to wait at home until tomorrow and not to worry if blood is still brownish. I need to get myself back in if it's bright red and a LOT of it as that would mean that's the second stage of miscarriage.

Anyone here had similar experiences?

I just need to get this off of my chest as don't feel like sharing with anyone from my family but my husband who is obviously well aware of what is happening.

Thank you anyone!

Don't want to leave your post unanswered. I could have wrote your post back in February of this year. I was (according to LMP) seven weeks, but sonographer dated the pregnancy

mattlou2 · 22/05/2014 13:44

I had a similar thing with this pregnancy and my last pregnancy. Both times they put me back about a week to what my dates were and both times the first time I went they couldn't detect a heart beat and I had to go back 10 days later where they were able to see it.
You've also been put back about a week so I find that perfectly normal now. Just means you ovulated slightly later in your cycle. :)

If the bleeding is light and darker it is a much less alarming than bright red, heavy bleeding.

Cramping, niggles and pains are perfectly normal and common but should be bareabe (although the twinges always made me go "oo")

On top of the very positive news with your scan I really wouldn't worry yourself unless things get heavier and more painful, but if things stay the same they should begin to improve soon.

Also, your cervix is going through changes and becomes more vascular, so it can be more prone to bleeding a little during sex etc. Blood really isn't always sinister and you're very early on so still very possible it's the aftermath of implantation xx

mattlou2 · 22/05/2014 13:46

Oh and baby's heart beat is usually detectable by 6 weeks pregnant, so the dates you were given, fit in with a good heartbeat :) x

Thanks IrnBru.
Not happy to read it and I'm sorry you had to go through it. I just have to come to terms with it but I am trying to stay strong.
If it's not meant to be then I would be better in myself if it happened now then later.
I'm trying desperately to think positive thoughts and get buried in work but it's so hard.
Also, apart from light nausea my boobs don't hurt pretty much at all - tiny bit maybe - so I am worried my pregnancy symptoms are going away...
I'm hoping for the best though.
Thanks again.

Thanks so much mattlou2!! It is so nice to read someone had a positive outcome after not very pleasant experiences! Well I'm hoping, just like my husband is asking me to, that as with your 2 pregnancies, everything will be just fine. He just wants me to relax and he'll look after our 5-year-old when I look after myself and our little bubba in my belly!
Thank you again :)

Do what you can do to relax and take it easy (even though nothing you do will cause a miscarriage) just to keep your mind at rest. It's good you have that support, it's important.

As for your comment about symptoms, my symptoms came and went sometimes every few days or even hours. Don't over analyse, you'll KNOW if something was wrong.

Have you got another scan booked? If you don't and you just can't think about anything else I'd wangle another scan to keep your sanity!

X

Belt · 22/05/2014 14:26

Thank you and no. I don't have another scan booked. Only the 12th week one which i've got in a month. I know what to look out for so I'll be careful but try my best to stay sane!
Thanks so much for your support. Much appreciated!

Although my experience when I miscarried was different from your post, my cousin had bleeding throughout the first trimseter or so of her pregnancy. She's now 33 weeks.
They were unable to say why she was bleeding, and she went for numerous scans, as early as 6 weeks, to check the heartbeat, etc. She also had brown blood, and a bit of red blood.
Although I can't really comment, if they have found a heartbeat, surely this is a good sign! I understand how hard it must be for you - when miscarried, started to bleed, went to a&e and they did a pregnancy test, which came back positive, and sent me home. It turned out I had an absorbed miscarriage, so the baby (being a clump of cells) absorbed back into my womb at around 5 weeks, but the ammnotic sac still grew, and was still experiencing pregnancy symptoms, as my body thought it was pregnant. At least you was offered a scan, and although the dates don't match to yours, as you said, that's nature! They still found a heart beat!

IrnBruTheNoo · 22/05/2014 16:52

There was a heartbeat detected when I went for my first scan at EPAU but then when I returned one week later I had MC'd, no heart beat detected.

Bugaboom · 22/05/2014 16:59

Last week I went for a scan after a bleed thinking I was 7 weeks pregnant. She found a heartbeat but also said I was more like 6 weeks (which I don't think is right- regular cycles pretty sure I know when I ovulated). I think the 12 week scan is more accurate for dating so try not to stress about the dates. I am still a little worried but they said they often can't find a reason for the bleed and the main thing is the heartbeat suggests things are progressing as normal. I'm trying to just take care of myself and rest as much as possible.

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 22/05/2014 18:42

I had bleeding from wk 6-10 had early scans one when by my dates was 6+5 n they said 6+0 then exactly wk later they said 7+1.

Had my 12wk scan this wk n by my dates was 12+4 n by prev scans 11+5/6 .

Well that scan said 12+5 so much more inline with my dates

My bleeding varied from Brown to red to pink to not alot to a fair bit was using panty liners not towels they think mine may have been due to a fibroid picked up on second scan

I got second scan as rang go as still bleeding n was coming up to Easter wknd so he got me in again as wasn't happy me being left.

Belt · 23/05/2014 18:51

Thank you all for your support. I appreciate this.

Unfortunately today I went for a second scan as was bleeding more and passed quite a chunky clot and they did not detect a heart beat anymore. Sad
I'm going to have a procedure on Tuesday to sort everything out as I can't bear myself to go through contractions and pass it all naturally.Sad

I wish all of you a very happy healthy pregnancies and to those unfortunate like me, a one very very soon!

I hope to join you soon with some better news I hope.

It all feels very surreal and I am processing it. Can't quite come to terms with it all yet.

But it wasn't meant to be. Sad

I had a terrible feeling about this, as your scenario was very similar to mine earlier this year...I am so so sorry for your loss. It's the most shocking feeling when you've been told in the scan room..Time is a great healer and it will get easier.

Alice1983 · 23/05/2014 22:20

Hello Belt,
Sorry to hear of your situation. I am going through the more or less the same thing. Your dates are really early, do you not prefer waiting until your 12 week scan? Maybe they didnt detect the heartbeat this time but maybe have another scan in a couple of weeks? How do you know it definately all over? Did you get a second opinion? I mean, they have told me to wait another two weeks...and might even wait for my 12 week scan. Brew

Rockchick1984 · 23/05/2014 23:42

So sorry it wasn't good news Belt Thanks

If it's an ERPC procedure, I had one last year and although emotionally obviously it was horrible, physically it was all fine - no pain, over very quickly, and meant I could get on with things. I had one AF then fell pregnant again, and now have a beautiful baby girl so hopefully you will experience similar.

Bugaboom · 24/05/2014 11:27

So sorry to read this belt Thanks

Belt · 24/05/2014 16:49

Hi All

Thank you.

Alice - I just know it. My body is also pretty much back to normal and I can drink coffee again, my boobs got smaller over the last couple of days with no pain (and they hurt a LOT this time round!) and I do get horrible cramps, especially at night - contraction-like, still passing clots.

Coffee was a big thing when I was pregnant for the first time 5 years ago (I do have a beautiful 5-year-old going 15!) - I am a coffee-holic - I LOVE it! And I couldn't drink the thing pretty much for the 2 trimesters then. So when I got really sick about 6 weeks ago from 1 sip of the stuff I knew I was pregnant!

Also, my first scan was done on my abdomen and I saw a very strong heart beat - all flickering/flattering. It was such a relief. You can detect hear beat at 6 weeks with an early scan. And that first one was done at a different ward as I thought I was about 8 weeks - that's why she didn't do an internal scan.
The second one was done internally @ Early Pregnancy Unit (as they put my dates back the day before, so to be more accurate) and it was just a white, non-moving fetus inside my womb. Eventually he said: I just can't find any heart beat.

Alice - I really really really do hope your news are good news. Keeping everything crossed for you!!

Rockchic - Yes, it is ERPC. Thank you for your words of encouragement as I am a bit worried. But I just can't bear thinking I would wait 2 weeks to pass everything naturally...
And CONGRATULATIONS on your baby girl! My husband is hoping for a girl this time round!

Apologies for an essay... It is such a personal experience but I am overwhelmed by your support lovely ladies.

We will be trying again ASAP so please keep your fingers crossed for a quick BFP! I am 35 this year so don't want to be trying for years...

Best of luck and hopefully I'll speak to you soon!

xxxxx

Also, Just wanted to add : I am Rhesus negative so the Anti-D I was given during my first pregnancy and straight after giving birth has definitely worn out (I believe it only lasts up to 12 weeks) - it was 5 years ago I had it injected.
I know there is no reason for miscarriage other than something is wrong with chromosomes in your baby hence the nature's way of saying it wasn't meant to be, but being Rhesus Negative and second time pregnancies - there could be a connection where mother's body fights an "alien" blood rhesus (+)
I think I naturally want to have an explanation to it all and I'd like to stick to my theory.
I am having Anti-D injection on Tuesday before my procedure. But I HAD TO tell the doctor that.
