Has just said that your nit supposed to eat cold cured meats. I have checked this in the net and they are safe to eat. Why do they feel the need to confuse things further. Very annoying!!

Yeh i thought that whole item was really cr@p! The women didn't give very clear advise I thought.

You do need to be careful with cured meats. This from the NHS website...

Be cautious with cold cured meats in pregnancy
Many cold meats such as salami, Parma ham, chorizo and pepperoni are not cooked, just cured and fermented, so there's a risk that they contain toxoplasmosis-causing parasites. It's best to check the instructions on the pack to see whether the product is ready-to-eat or needs cooking first.
For ready-to-eat meats, you can reduce any risk from parasites by freezing cured/fermented meats for four days at home before you eat them. Freezing kills most parasites and so makes the meat safer to eat.
If you're planning to cook the meat (for instance, pepperoni on pizza) then you don't need to freeze it first.
If you're eating out in a restaurant that sells cold cured/fermented meats they may not have been frozen. If you're concerned, ask the staff or avoid eating it.

But I'm not concerned. She shouldn't be saying things that simply are not true. I think all of this can't eat stuff really is nonsense!

I agree Lucy I've not really stopped eating anything on the "list".

Things I have avoided are pate and deep water fish. But that's just out of preference.

I still eat runny yolks, rare meat and soft foreign cheeses!!! It's all about moderation and preparation in my eyes. (Chef by trade) and if I followed the "list" I would have starved in my first trimester!!!

missusbond007 · 21/05/2014 14:47

Totally agree think the "list" bit much. I was actually told not to eat mince by midwife and only eat steak-which had to be well done!! Bleeeghh!! Surely if it's cooked and not completely bloody it's fine?? Seems overkill!? Also no wonder kids allergic to everything when they pop out as they haven't been exposed to anything??!!

"Cured" meat is uncooked (e.g. Parma ham)
It is not the same as cooked cold meats, which are 100% fine if in date and properly stored.

As another poster put, with the raw stuff you just freeze it (like you would sushi):
"It's best to check the instructions on the pack to see whether the product is ready-to-eat or needs cooking first.

This Morning was incorrect- their fact checking on woman's health isn't fantastic and I would trust the official NHS website FAR more than some researcher on a daytime TV show. :)

Missus sometimes the midwives even don't know. On another thread one talked about raw egg in McFlurries... well you can go on the McDs website, there's NO EGG in McFlurry! None at all!
I've had one say prawns are OK, another said only eat them hot... depends on when they trained and their own funny ideas half the time.
I like a list, but reckon the official one will be regularly updated and not change on one person's whim.

missusbond007 · 21/05/2014 20:03

I think it's about being sensible. I've really avoided liver (not hard) and pate and raw egg. Think if it's good quality and it's cooked properly there should be no issue
