Don't think my diet is awful (not saintly either) but past few days I've had heartburn after everything I eat. Know milk is recommended but totally hate milk so that's not an option...any other tips?

Gaviscon. Ranitidine or omeprazole from your gp if really troublesome. You can buy ranitidine (an omeprazole I think) but if you want it on prescription for volume and cost purposes, or just so you know it's ok, then gp! If you get it at night, raise the head of the bed on books etc and sleep a bit more propped up than usual (if you can!).

Thanks. So Gaviscon is ok?

Gaviscon is fine. Recommend keeping bottle in the fridge during the day and dragging out next to the bed at night, lovely and cooling on the way down! During the day, I tend to hoik a packet of Rennie tablets around with me - easier than a liquid. They are also fine to take Smile

Mine started at 10 weeks, so I feel your pain. Gaviscon is fine but didn't work for me. I'm on omeprazole. Try propping yourself up at night too. Avoid spicy foods, or anything too fatty. Eat little and often instead of big meals. Ginger is meant to be good, but made me worse!

I'm on Gaviscon advanced and for the first time in 19 weeks have stopped being sick! Definitely give it a go! X

MostlyMama · 20/05/2014 12:44

Gaviscon is stupidly expensive, go down to your local chemist, ask for Peptac, just over £3 for a bottle that would cost nearer 7 quid if it were gaviscon, did the trick, taste wasn't great but better than suffering with it.

thatstoast · 20/05/2014 12:56

The only think that worked for me was milk, I know you didn't want to hear that but maybe milk is better than heartburn overall?

I had to stop eating tomatoes as that made it really bad.

Moonshine1 · 20/05/2014 12:57

Get gaviscon on prescription from your GP so you don't have to pay for it!

Lula2515 · 20/05/2014 16:00

Ooo can you get it on prescription?! I'll ask.
thatstoast I've been eating tomatoes non stop..maybe that's my problem!

Another vote for gaviscon here, I'm only 9 weeks but it's saved me. Also found avoiding really sugary fruit like pineapple has helped as well as fruit juice. If it's bad at night try propping yourself up a bit higher.

Lula2515 · 21/05/2014 15:34

Just as an update, saw my midwife today and she said a big cause of heartburn is often too much wheat and that that's much worse for causing it than acidic foods like you'd think x

Gaviscon :)

I take the tablet form, just wish it wasn't so expensive! tried a couple other options (Renne, Tums) and they didn't touch it.

Try keeping good posture too, I get it worst when I sit slumped!

schmalice · 21/05/2014 17:43

coolcat you can get it on prescription so free if you're pregnant

MrsMonkeyBear · 21/05/2014 19:44

I vote gaviscon too!!! I have been given 2 pint size bottles on prescription. One for home, one for work/going out. Some days I feel like sitting here, reading mumsnet, with a straw in the bottle. takes another spoonful from giant bottle

My triggers are garlic, tomatoes, whey and bananas.

catyloopylou · 21/05/2014 19:52

Gaviscon sachets are good for keeping in your bag/carrying around with you. And there are 2 flavours so if you don't like one try the other.

my mw suggested apple cider vinegar with the mother, from health food shops. Mix a spoonful in water with some honey and down it. It's supposed to be a general tonic and also to help with heart burn. I don't know if it helped, but the heartburn didn't get any worse.

I echo pp advice for eating little and often, sitting upright and sleeping propped up. And milk.

Boogles91 · 21/05/2014 20:09
