Cold sore remedies

Does anyone have a remedy for cold sores apart from what you buy over the counter? I never got cold sores before I got pregnant. One cleared up only a week or so ago after I'd had it for weeks and now I've got another one coming in a different place. Its sore, hot and throbbing. Can anyone help. My skin is a nightmare since bub took up residence! Thanks.

Best bet is Zovirax (sorry, it is over the counter) - and keep a chapstick handy so your lips don't get cracked / sore.

Its usually when you're a bit run down that they occur, so keeping on multi-vitamins and watching the intake of caffiene / sugary things replaced with herbal teas and fruit should help.

I've suffered them all my life - but normally only once or twice a year. I'd had 4 within the first 6 months of pregnancy, but they went very quickly...

oops, sorry, can't quite get to grips with adding web addresses, hopefully you'll get there somehow!

I read somewhere that coffee was good for clearing up coldsores. You had to make up a paste of it and paint it on the sore. Obviously no good if you want to go out anywhere as you look a bit daft!
Not sure if coffee works though as I use Cymex. I don't think it;s as strong as Zovorax but if I put some on when I feel a sore coming up they never seem to erupt into anything.

This stuff is the business....DH suffers horribly and with zovirax they last about 2 weeks and are agonising. with this stuff, they are gone in 2-3 days and as chapstick can prolong them, it also acts as a form of chapstick. You put is on lightly every hour or as needed.

It's called Themba - it is absolutely brilliant for anything 'skin' like. Recommended by a therapist and it really really does work. A 30 ml pot will last you forever.

My Hubby uses to get cold sores all the time when I met him due to work stress. I sugested for him to take lysene to prevent outbreaks and it worked a treat. He has only had 2 minor cold sores in te last 5 years; normally when he forgets to take his lysene. I did some research on the internet for lysene during pregnancy and it seems safe. This was a dirsct quote from the natural childbirth website " Herpes outbreaks occur, as I understand it, when there is a deficiency of lysine. To treat outbreaks, a woman may take L-Lysine 1000 mg three times a day for 5 days. It is more effective if taken at the first sign of outbreak (tingling or pain). She may then follow with L-Lysine 500 mg four times a day for the rest of the pregnancy for suppression therapy. In our practice, we encourage pregnant women to take lysine as described above for the entire pregnancy. It seems to be very effective and is an inexpensive supplement. Women should also emphasize foods which are high in lysine in their diets.
