Diarrhoea & constant Braxton Hicks after sex - ok??

Firstly, sorry if TMI!

My DH and I, err, did the deed this afternoon. Within half an hour I had the most horrific upset tummy - we were in the car, had to stop at public toilets, and it was a bit reminiscent of Trainspotting (sorry). Ugh. Since then my bump has been tightening constantly - Braxton Hicks - which is uncomfortable.

Has anyone else had this? Does the diarrhoea cause the BH? I joked to DH that he's put me into early labour - but can sex cause BH?

Apologies if I'm asking a silly question, but I'm wondering if they're all connected, or it's just an unfortunate coincidence. And there my tummy tightens again - oof!

How far along are you? If you are concerned best phone your midwife.

coffeeandcream · 15/05/2014 18:14

How far along are you? Upset tummy is very common just before labour. It's the bodies at of clearing away everything that might get in the way of labour and birth...

33 weeks.
No more upset tummy but still lots of tightenings. Will see how evening progresses, maybe I could do with a warm bath

Upset tummy followed by contractions - my money is on early labour!

If it's not settled down in an hour I'd call the labour ward for advice.

Mrsrochesterscat · 15/05/2014 19:35

I would call sooner rather than later. Sex can start labour, and you are showing clear signs of being in labour. If caught early enough there is an injection they give you that can help baby's lungs develop.

Mrsrochesterscat · 15/05/2014 19:37

Sorry, I missed that - a bath can speed labour up too. It may be nothing, but please call your delivery unit for advice. I hope it all goes well.

I had this after sex at 32wks, have had loads of diarrhoea this pregnancy but the braxton hicks really scared me. Had them all night and was a bit sore day after but then they were gone and I'm 35wks now. As long as they're just tightenings and not actually painful I'm sure you'll be fine.

theborrower · 15/05/2014 20:53

Oh god, you've freaked me out now.

Are they def BH? You know, when everything feels a bit tight and your tummy is rock hard? I do feel a bit uncomfortable, but to compare, I have had contractions before (in my first pregnancy - this is my 2nd) and they don't have a rise to a peak. My tummy generally feels tight most of the time.

I'm going to keep an eye on it, if it's still like this at bed time I'll call, but then they'll make me go in, won't they? I don't think it's labour... Is it?

When I went into labour at 29 weeks I didn't even realise - it was the midwife (I was in hospital overnight as I'd had a small bleed that morning) who twigged.

I just couldn't straighten up every so often and she saw me stuck and asked what was happening, then sat with a hand on my bump and a watch. I was contracting painlessly four time every ten minutes.

They had a theatre prepped and blood ready and a SCBU cot prepared within minutes.

Fortunately they managed to stop it for another three weeks, but just because it doesn't hurt, please don't leave it!

theborrower · 15/05/2014 22:25

I called the Triage, and they didn't seem too concerned. They said that sex can set off BH, as can diarrhoea, but if I feel that they are getting stronger and painful, to call them back. They also said that if they're still going on in the morning to call the midwife who can come and visit. I'll go to bed in about an hour, and I guess if I have trouble sleeping that will indicate if they're getting worse.

Well like everyone says, don't wait until things feel worse. If you have a feeling that things aren't right or you feel you sent to get checked out, do so. You won't get turned away.

Fx it's just your baby doing a happy dance whilst high on orgasm endorphins!!

Mrsrochesterscat · 15/05/2014 23:59

I hope you get some rest and you feel more comfortable soon.

Morning! I slept well, and all seems fine this morning Smile

That's great. Now, no more overly-energetic sex until at least 37 weeks!

theborrower · 16/05/2014 15:18

I know. Serves us right for taking advantage of a day off and DD still in nursery Wink

Seriously though, you got me a bit worried last night! Also made me think that I really better start sorting my hospital bag...
