Light bleed at 11 weeks pregnant

Hello, I'm a Mumsnet novice and I'd really welcome some friendly advice.

I'm almost 11 weeks pregnant and since I conceived, I've been suffering from severe thrush. I've been treating it with canesten cream with varying degrees of success. Among other lovely side effects I've had a horrible whitey yellow discharge (tmi alert!). Two days ago, my discharge turned brown and I freaked out and went to see my GP. He thought it was thrush related and gave me pessaries. He was so reassuring and told me to stop worrying, a brown show is common and the most important thing was treating the thrush. I left feeling happy. Last night I used one of the pessaries and this morning, noticed my discharge had become light red rather than brown. I'm really worried, but don't want to keep making doctor's appointments.

Just wondering if anyone else had experienced anything like this and whether I should be frantically following this up now that the colour has changed to fresh blood? I should also mention I had a scan at 9w and everything was normal. Another reason why the GP wasn't too worried but not sure it puts my mind at rest. I've been feeling so positive up to now and today, I'm uneasy.

Hi capey, sorry to hear you've been suffering! Am currently in the same boat after a dose of ABs that cleared up my UTI but left me with a delightful case of thrush!

Can I ask how you applied the pessary? Sorry to be a bit graphic, but generally the advice is to use an applicator to get it as high into the vagina as possible, but when you're pregnant you're better off just using your fingers and not trying to push it so far up, in case of inadvertent damage to the cervix.

A bit of blood can indicate cervical erosion, which is nothing to worry about, but if you're concerned, I'd call the midwife and see what she tells you. At the end of the day, it's your pregnancy - their job isn't to judge, it's to help. Now and in future, if you're worried at all I'd call them just for reassurance Smile

Thanks TwigletFiend. I used a finger rather than the applicator, as I've heard they're not recommended in pregnancy due to sharp edges. It didn't go up too high either, so I don't think I've damaged anything, which is why the blood is even stranger.

Sorry to hear you're suffering, too. I've not been able to sit down for 2 months Smile. Doctor recommended pessaries (500mg) and salt baths for me.

I've yet to see a midwife but I guess I could call the number on my appointment letter. Has to be better than guessing and feeling really worried.

I would try that - explain that you haven't been booked in yet, but you're 11 weeks and worried about some bleeding and could someone maybe offer you some advice. Hopefully they can help you out and maybe move things along for your booking and 12 week scan too Smile

I think that kind of spotting regardless of thrush can be entirely normal early on, can't it? I know I had it, freaked out massively about it too but everything was fine GrinGrinGrin

Thanks Raskova. It's my first pregnancy so I'm clueless. I just naturally freaked out. Whatever happened to positive thinking, eh? Sorry to sound graphic but how much blood are you describing. I'm wearing a panty liner and it's 1/3 filled with light red blood. You don't have to answer if you don't want to.

No it's fine.

Mine was very dark, almost brown and there were a few splodges (can't think of any other word so I hope you kwim) and it was there if I touched inside sort of thing.

Did you say in OP there is any pain?

ChicaMomma · 14/05/2014 17:26

Capey, i had something like this at 10 weeks. it was almost pink it was so bright. had 2 or 3 of them over 24 hours, then nothing, then a bit more brown and then no more of anything... It was a 'sub chorionic hematoma' as diagnosed by the hospital. A small tear in the placenta. healed quickly and no issues since (35 weeks now!)

Raskova · 14/05/2014 17:27

I don't know a thing about thrush but does it bleed? Light blood is fresh blood.

capey · 14/05/2014 17:29

Ah, mine started off dark and it's getting lighter.

No pain apart from the discomfort of the thrush infection. It tends to slow down in the evening and at night and get worse when I'm walking around in the day.

I'm waiting for a call back from my GP so I will update. My day care unit couldn't advise before 12 weeks. Confused

You can never enquire too much at the docs/midwife. Definitely take it easy if it's less when you're at home Grin

Definitely keep is updated. I'm sure everything will be fine GrinBrew

Hello, I wanted to add an update to my original thread as I thought it might be helpful to anyone searching for info on light bleeds in early pregnancy online.

I managed to get an appointment with my midwife a few days after the bleeding started and she said a bit of dark brown blood or light red spotting is not in itself a worrying sign. She explained that the cervix is like a pair of lips and like any sensitive skin, chapping, cracking, and a bit of bleeding is not uncommon. Danger signs to watch out for are lots of dark red blood and severe pain.

I've since also had my 12 week scan and the baby is fine! I was dated 11 w 1 d and not 12, but no other problems.

The bleeding stopped after 5 days, although sadly, the thrush lingers on. I hope this comforts anyone else with similar issues.
