Ok sorry for the incredibly shallow question, i know its not important in the scheme of things!!! ......

Im hoping for a waterbirth but whether i have it or not i still dont know what to pack for giving birth. Im pained to spend any money on anything i dont already own (not much!) just for giving birth.
With regards to going home I have leggings and a pair of big knickers packed but not sure what else I will need.
Weather could be doing anything in June but guess thats largely irrelevant as I will be going straight to the car and then straight home!
Any advice?

Old nightie the first time, top I arrived in the second time (no time to take it off).

I can't remember what I went home in, maternity jeans and a maternity top I think.

Flickstar · 14/05/2014 13:25

I had a nice nightie packed- breast feeding friendly and lace trimmed, perfect for the post birth photos. I had an EMCS so was in a hospital gown, oh how DH laughed when the midwife stripped my carefully chosen nightie off to put an epidural in!

Going home I wore a maternity maxi dress (black!) and plan on the sand this time round.

pommedeterre · 14/05/2014 14:39

Cheapest nightie I could fine and it went in the bin afterwards - same for both births.

Going home, legging, some shapeless jersey monstrosity no doubt (i.e. maternity clothes).

I did buy fleecy socks though to wear as shoes in the ward and that worled well.

passmethewineplease · 14/05/2014 14:44

For DD1 I had bought a primark nightie for £4 but as i needed forceps in theatre I ended up with one of their lovely gowns...

For ds I went in the pool with my top on, I felt chilly for some reason, I went home in joggers and vest top with a cardigan, there was no way I was wearing the trousers I went in with. They were grim.

weebairn · 14/05/2014 16:22

I had a couple of typical labour nightshirts ready - somehow managed to do most of my longish labour in just a vest top, nothing on the bottom, like a pornographic and rather foolish Lara Croft. I just didn't give a shit what I was wearing once it started, so the bottoms came off and I didn't care about changing the top!

I had my baby at home so didn't have any going home outfit which was quite nice, just lounged around in new pjs. Grin I think I had some trackie bottoms and tshirt packed in case I had to go to hospital. comfort is key! I didn't really have much a bump left after the first day, but I was a very weird shape for a bit!

mummy2pickle · 14/05/2014 17:00

I took several outfits as also wanted a pool birth. I got in the pool and was wearing the strappy top I had on which proven the best outfit. if you take leggings to come home in don't forget a long top or cardigan to cover you bum, the sight of large maternity pads showing through leggings is not good!!

starrynight123 · 14/05/2014 17:10

One thing my mum mentioned was to pack shoes that you can slip on without having to bend down, like ballerinas or flipflops or something, because it can be really painful to bend down after giving birth and if you have stitches.

sillymillyb · 14/05/2014 17:16

I arrived at 10cm and stripped off straight away - I remember midwife trying to put a sheet around me to protect my modesty. I couldn't have given a toss Grin

After ds was born I remember being totally confused about what I should wear. I'd given it absolutely no thought at all before hand. I sent my mum to m&s and she bought me leggings and a long vest and cardi. All black as I was bleeding like no ones business!

Plateofcrumbs · 14/05/2014 19:46

Not been through this yet but planning on sourcing some black harem/yoga pants and loose long t-shirts in lieu of PJs for the immediate post-birth days, including going home from hospital. Figure that will be comfortable and maternity pad friendly, and suitable for BFing and sleeping but also presentable enough for leaving the house if I feel ambitious.

Boogles91 · 14/05/2014 19:50

Mum and dad sjust bought me a nigh tee shirt :D cute tigger one, justwaiting on my tax rebate and grant so i can sort out rest of me hospital. Bag x

Nunyabiz · 14/05/2014 19:56

Ola! I am due to have DD2 any day now. Planned for water birth with Dd1 but as things go, nothing is certain. I Dis labour in water but had to get and and to be honest- in the moment I stripped off naked completely Blush I did not given a second thought to it and am usually quite prudish lol. I look back now and think ohhhh Lordy. It's like being drunk (even though I had no drugs- not even g&a) I just lost all inhibitions.
Anyway this time I am more- let's see how I go... So am packing a comfy bra for the birth pool such as this

And a nightie this one

And for going home I have bought dress&Rf-700=1000&Rf-200=3&Rf900=1465&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=50&sort=1&clr=Blue this dress

I think I was conscious to buy more loose fitting dress style outfits in the unlikely event that I end up with an emcs- just in case. Plus darker colours for giving birth (for obvious reasons)

Nunyabiz · 14/05/2014 19:58

Oh and fwiw I wore a maxi dress home last time- stretchy fabric from H&M I think it was circa 10pound Wink

GrassIsSinging · 14/05/2014 20:04

I had c-sections, so it was a theatre gown for me!

After birth, I went home in big cotton knickers, stretchy yoga pants and a tunic top I could whip my breasts out of easily, and pretty much lived in this combo and/or nice button up nighties /PJs in soft cotton fabric for a few weeks.

You honestly wont give a shit, OP. I had my hair and nails done before my births, as a token gesture to being groomed. I bought my make-up bag in to hospital so I'd look nice for post birth pictures..mwa ha ha ha...I didnt use it for about a month.

theborrower · 14/05/2014 21:25

Theatre gown for me (EMCS). Left hospital in maternity t-shirt and jeans. This time I'll pack a big black t-shirt and tankini top if a VBAC. And I'm going to look into getting some nice black yoga style pants for comfort afterwards too, the ones I'm wearing just now are getting a bit faded and scabby (but oh so comfy).

Kate looked fab afterwards, but who's betting she had a stylist in the hospital, tena pants and double maternity pads to prevent a horrible accident on that gorgeous blue dress? I thought she looked emotional, wouldn't be surprised if she had a big cry beforehand!

MummytoMog · 14/05/2014 23:38

Gave birth in a t shirt both times (well first time ended up in a gown in theatre at the end) and I use it as a nightie when not labouring in it. Wearing it now in fact. Both times came home in maternity jeans and a nice loose top. I looked rather good and I did care I'm afraid!

StampyIsMyBoyfriend · 14/05/2014 23:44

Waterbirthed in my birthday suit, left hospital in the same unwashed maternity yoga trousers & top I arrived in...

slithytove · 14/05/2014 23:51

Nunya, have you bought that dress yet? What is the length like?

I really need a nice dress for a wedding, I'll be around 26 weeks. I'm 5'4 so knee lenght maternity dresses <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=resources.shopstyle.com/sim/2f/b6/2fb61b3d569690ca80f146ea78e1d7e2/new-look-heavenly-bump-red-floral-print-sash-tie-wrap-dress.jpg&imgrefurl=www.shopstyle.co.uk/browse/maternity-dresses/New-Look&h=205&w=83&tbnid=bX5QAgtPeSpOGM:&zoom=1&docid=AaFvdTdUYhw6nM&hl=en&ei=uvJzU9ekNceb0QXYj4H4DA&tbm=isch&client=safari&ved=0CGsQMygqMCo" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">like this just swamp me.

The one in that pic looks quite short but I'm guessing the model is about 7'2 so might work on me? Grin

Also, how do their sizes come up? I'm a 16 in new look maternity

Nunyabiz · 14/05/2014 23:56

Just ordered yesterday. Still waiting for it to arrive so I'm telling baby she has to stay put until my parcels arrive Grin
The model is 5'11 (my height) so just above the knee it seems for her.
I find the maternity range have pretty accurate sizing from Asos - especially stretchy fabric where you have a bit of leeway, but I think I would be a little more cautious with non stretchy fabrics as I have had blouses from there before that have been very restrictive in my normal size 10.

slithytove · 15/05/2014 00:00

Size ten and 5'11

Envy

I will go and find some like minded short arsed dumpy pregnant women to advise me Grin in my defense I was dinky before 3 babies in 2 years

Hope the dress is nice, it looks lovely :)
Have you had anything from new look maternity to compare size? E.g. Are you a ten in both?

slithytove · 15/05/2014 00:03

Sorry for the massive hijack!

First 2 babies, hospital gowns due to wrecking my clothes with DD and needing an epidural, DS I can't remember what I wore for induction - various maternity outfits and jammies (was there for 3 days) but then a gown for emcs.

Coming home just something out of my maternity wardrobe which didn't rub on my scar. I think it involved leggings and boots.

This baby is due in sept, and I'm hoping for a waterbirth, so tankini top, bf nightie for after, and then maybe one of my maternity dresses and flip flops to come home in. With the obligatory Bridget jones knickers underneath.

Nunyabiz · 15/05/2014 00:05

Bahaha! Oh dear wasn't meant to be a stealth boast (but in all honesty I'm jealous of women who get to wear heals as I look like a bloody amazon- grass is always greener eh?).
I haven't bought anything from new look, I went in to buy some maternity skinny jeans and try them on for length mainly and they only had boot cut available, complete let down Hmm sorry can't help with that!

slithytove · 15/05/2014 00:20

This is true, I can be grateful for my lovely heels :)

Plus my feet haven't got bigger at all despite my kids destroying the rest of my body woohoo

Not to worry, I've posted a thread now, I'm hoping my like minded dumpy comment doesn't offend anyone! I'm not that miserable, the sizing is all in my boobs and I still have fab legs! not very stealthy though
