I am now 8 days late and have already had a sweep and a show and I am now booked in for being induced on Friday if nothing happens in the mean time.

I am quite anxious about it and because of the constant waiting now am bursting into tears about the whole thing.

I would really love to hear how people found being induced- good and bad stories please!

Induced twice - both time by pessary. First time was a little irritating, as it was my first birth, and the blessed midwife wouldn't believe that I was having pains! But, they weren't bad until around 10 hours after the induction, and ds was born three hours later. Second time, dd arrived about an hour and a quarter after the induction - it was pretty painful, but I didn't feel I could moan about that!
For me, it really was not a bid deal at all - although I was obviously one of the luckier ones.
And it will be worthwhile!!

Hi ronniemummy - won't write an essay just some hopefully helpful points:

Try sex, pineapple, walking, nipple tweaking etc etc - a natural labour is preferable if you can get it going.

An induced labour is generally more painful than a natural one because you get the 'thrown in at the deep end' thing rather than it coming on more naturally/slowly.

Once they start interferering they will want to monitor you so mobility is a bit reduced.

An induced labour is more likely to end up with forceps/ventouse/section so read up and be prepared - the worst thing with all these things is not knowing what's going on, if you have some warning you can make better choices at the time.

Be open to pain relief, half way through my induction I chose to have an epidural (after saying I didnt want one) - it was the bestt thing I did and it meant they could put me on plenty of meds to speed it all up without worrying about making it unbearable for me. Also be aware that you can ask for a half dose of pethidine/meptid if you want a little something but don't feel you need a full dose.

Hope this helps - it's all worth it in the end - honest!

when I was induced the baby was delivered onto my chest and we had skin to skin contact and she had her first bf. She fed for about half an hour and then I got my tear stitched (that took about half an hour too ). I dont think being induced affected my bonding experience at all.

TuttiFrutti · 30/08/2006 14:16

Don't worry too much about the bonding - this may not happen immediately (with any type of birth) but will almost certainly happen within a few hours or days. When I was pregnant the first time, one of the things they stressed at antenatal classes was to avoid C-sections at all costs because, among other things, "you won't be able to breastfeed" and "you won't bond properly with the baby". Well, guess what, I had a C-section and bonded straight away and breastfed straight away.

Coathanger · 30/08/2006 14:40

Induction doesn't as far as I know affect breastfeeding. All mine, both induced and spontaneous, latched on straight after birth. They were all delivered onto my tummy and we bonded beautifully.

I think as far as fear of intervention goes, that is a valid fear and one I understand, however, that is a fear all mums to be have, whether they are faced with induction or not. Being afraid is part and parcel of labour I think, whether it's your first or 4th

When did you have the sweep ? It tqkes q few dqys to work. I had one on the Wed and at the same time she booked me for an induction for the following Mon. I had a show on Sat morning and delivered on Sun morning. You might be lucky enough to have your baby before your induction date.

I was induced with DS1 - had pessary at 4.30pm he was born at 11.30pm - I didn't realise I was in labour until 9.30pm as they were expecting it to take a few days and the contractions were very similar to bad period pain!! Birth was fairly straightforward only time for gas and air - and the 2 paracetamols a Midwife offered me before she checked me 15 mins later and decided I was ready to push !!!! He was delviered onto my chest and had a breastfeed as soon as I was stiched back up !! It wasn't as bad as I anticipated as Inductions are generally more painful, longer labours and more likely to result in interventions but you may be an exception to the rule like me.

Good Luck

hiya, had a pleasant ,straightforward labour with my 2nd which was an induction due to high bp. they broke my waters, went straight into labour, there was no need for any drips because my contractions were strong almost immediately. just used gas & air. baby was born 2 1/2 hours later. he came out in a few pushes and was remarkably calm and alert. it was a truly amazing experience, one that i relish now even almost 7 years later..

Induced with ds, second baby at 37 weeks. Water broke at 10am. Contractions started at 12noon. He was born at 1.35pm no pain relief. Hope for tea in time to put dd to bed at 6.30pm. Perfect

kpmumtobe · 30/08/2006 22:32

so good to have some positive comments about the induction. booked in now for friday night. another sweep today. have had a fiercly hot curry, sex is promised tonight if i don't fall asleep first! and also downed a tbs of castor oil, as rec. by MW this pm. this girl will try anything...keeping fingers crossed. but natural birth MW was also v positive about ways in which i could turn the induction into a positive experience should it come to that, which has reduced my panic a bit.

katyjo · 30/08/2006 22:46

HI ronniemummy, I was induced - had a 4 hour labour (total, started 10.30pm ds born 2.30am)no problems and didn't have a bad time at all. I would recommend a tens machine, I think it helped I put it on early on and gas and air is fantastic. Good luck!!
