Hello experienced mums

I'm packing up my nappy bag (and DH's) for the first time and just wonder if I could please ask what you tend to carry around each day with a newborn? So far I have;

  • nappies
  • nappy cream
  • nappy bags
  • teddy
  • two Muslins
  • Vaseline
  • bottle (if fb doesn't work)
  • camera
  • my stuff (keys, wallet etc)

What am I missing? I can't help but think I must be going to need more...stuff everyday? What do you think?

Milton wipes for dropped dummy. Or spare dummy.
First aid kit in mine.
Money
Nappies
Cotton wool
Bottle of water
Nappy sacks

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 12/05/2014 20:41

And it was separate to my handbag whoch was a small cross bdy with phone and keys in. Change bag stayed in the bottom of the buggy.

I have:

Nappies
Wipes
Nappy bags
Dettol wipes (handy for manky change tables and high hairs)
Dummy wipes (easier than those fiddly little Milton dummy sterilisers when dummy gets dropped somewhere filthy!)
Sudocreme
Spare vest and babygrow (a must - incase you have a poonami!)
Muslins
Dummies (essential if your baby uses a dummy. I forgot them the other day. Never again!Shock)
Bibs (esp if FF!)
Changemat (folds up - comes with my bag)

Antibacterial hand gel (in case you have to change a stinky bum and can't wash your hands)
Hand cream (for after the antibacterial hand gel!)
Baby sun cream and sun hat if sunny
Calpol
Bonjela teething gel
Tampon
Panty liner

Did have breast pads too but I am bottle feeding now so however many bottles I need for the trip.

Then obviously:
Purse
Phone
Keys

I have a separate insulated lunch bag for bottles, formula and now food as we have reached 6 months and started weaning.

Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy Smile

Oh yes, don't really use sudocrem or anything like that. Try and use cotton wool and water or water wipes for as long as you can then if baby gets a sore bum it's better to kept the bum dry than use creamy products. We used caldascene. It cleared up in no time and they have little travel sized one (boots)

TerrifiedMothertobe · 12/05/2014 20:48

My baby has a teddy and has had him from 12 weeks, so include if you want him to become 'The Comforter'

Nack for you (if bf), clean top of you are that bothered, definitely at least 2 changes for baby, babygrows best. In case of large up the back shat moment when stuck in pub/shops/ resteraunts.

SoftSheen · 12/05/2014 20:58

3 nappies
Wipes
Mini antibacterial hand gel
Babygrow and vest
Giant muslin (can be used to mop up milk, as a light blanket, sunshade or breastfeeding cover)
Breast pads and nipple cream (if breastfeeding)

OooOooTheMonkey · 12/05/2014 20:59

Ooh. Forgot.
Also I pack Sophie la giraffe and a packet of tissues. And always my sunglasses!
:)

andsmile · 12/05/2014 21:02

Ipad

Lipgloss

handcream

hubbahubster · 12/05/2014 21:32

Nappies x 4
Nappy bags
2 x complete change of clothes for DC
Wipes
Bum cream if your LO suffers with soreness
Muslins x 2
If your baby is particularly sicky, you might want a clean top for yourself.

I love my fold-up changing mat with pockets for nappies etc - you'd be surprised how many cafés etc with high chairs don't actually provide baby changing facilities.

HomeIsWhereTheGinIs · 12/05/2014 21:49

Gosh, thank you everyone! I turned away for five minutes and you all came to my aid!

waves at auntie

I'm seven weeks out now and I like to be organised. It honestly soothes me, so I think I'll pack up both of them (dh has a sporting bag he's wanted for ages with a nappy wallet and I bought a very pretty leather nappy bag) with everything on here and then discard items as necessary.

Interesting that few people have teddies, although I suppose the baby won't really know what it is for for the first six months...

Thank you all! I definitely heart mumsnet.

Even when your baby is old enough to know what's teddy is gin, they will probably fixate on one in particular, at which point I advise you to get as many spares/clean ones as you can.

Tinkerisdead · 12/05/2014 21:58

I used to keep my redbook in a ziplock bag in mine because Guaranteed it would be the one thing I'd forget on weigh in clinic!

MinesAPintOfTea · 13/05/2014 05:55

If you're having separate changing bags then don't you be responsible for stocking both!

Anyway when I packed my labour bag I also filled the changing bag with a good few days supply of stuff so I just had two sleepsuits, a hat and I couple of nappies in my hospital bag which was good as I spent 3 days being dragged all over the hospital before ds actually arrived.

FreeSpirit89 · 13/05/2014 09:46

I always had one of the little milk powder containers in there too. It helped store the powder and it was already measured out to, so just tip it in. Enough for 3 :) x

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 13/05/2014 10:57

I never understood those baby powder boxes. I found it more a faff trying to get the water past 70° when out amd about than anything else.

I'm packing up my nappy bag (and DH's) for the first time and just wonder if I could please ask what you tend to carry around each day with a newborn? So far I have;

  • nappies - these are of course essential
  • nappy cream - meh. Less so. I only carry it if baby has a sore bum already.
  • nappy bags - these and some carrier bags for if/when baby has a nappy explosion and you need to peel all the horrible clothes off and stach them somewhere.
  • teddy - not required
  • two Muslins - one will do
  • Vaseline - as for nappy cream
  • bottle - one of those pre-made formula cartons is also handy. I used to go out with an unopened prewarmed bottle of formula - it had usually cooled down enough by the time DS was squalling.
  • camera - depends how good your phone is Grin
  • my stuff - necessary!
thereisnoeleventeen · 13/05/2014 11:52

Your list just about covers it OP, for spare clothes I pack a couple of rolled up baby grows and then top up with blankets if its cold.

For feeds I use those cartons of formula and take a bottle, it's easier than taking water and powder.

I have older DC's so I have to pack light as I have pants and potty training bits along with drinks and snacks to carry. I also take a mini first aid kit with those sachets of calpol so you don't have to take a bottle out.

Rather than a teddy I take one of those activity toys, if it plays a tune so much the better (I remember meeting a friend for lunch and the only thing that kept DD settled long enough for me to eat was the tune that the giraffe played).

I also keep a nappy changing stash in the boot so if needs be then I can do a change in the car or if I have forgotten stuff its not far away.

You're all brill, thank you. Who needs pregnancy books when Mumsnet is around?!
