mmr while pregnant

My last mmr was when I was a baby and I've been told I don't have immunity to rubella...

My practice nurse has left a voice mail saying I need to call her about it.

I don't think I should have it, it's a live vaccine so I could potentially become ill from it, though it's unlikely. I have never ever heard of anyone having rubella (except people my parents age having it as children)... so surely it's unlikely that I would be exposed to it and having the vaccine actually increases the chances?

What would and have you done?

You can't have it done when pregnant. The rubella element could harm your unborn baby. Clearly the nurse is not aware that you are pg.

I had rubella (German measles) as a child in the 80s. It was quite common then. Less so now.

I've had rubella (aka german measles) and a slight scare with it during this pregnancy. It is so dangerous for unborn babies. I'd have the jab in a heartbeat. There's a reason they test your immunity during early pregnancy.

I had to my rubella done as I left hospital with ds1 (after giving birth), wouldn't do it when I was pg.

Hi Alita,

I am a practice nurse, and it is advised that if you have no rubella immunity that you should be vaccinated as soon as it is safe to do so. In our practice we tend to provide you with a letter that you give to your midwife and you will be vaccinated before you leave hospital after giving birth; or you would be invited to come to the surgery the day that you are discharged. It should not be given during pregnancy except in very very rare circumstances due to it being a live vaccine.

Your practice nurse probably wants to discuss the results with you and give you advice about what to do if you have a suspected contact with rubella.

Good luck, pm me if you want to ask anything!

Good luck

Euro I only know I'm not immune because I'm pregnant so I think she knows.
The lines engaged so haven't been able to return her call.
Red that's good to know thank you, so fingers crossed that's what the nurse says.

My thinking was that atm my risk of rubella Is quite low as it's no longer common but by taking the vaccine I'd be putting myself at risk?

I'm pregnant and have no immunisation against rubella. I was just told if I got any symptoms to get them checked immediately and stay away from anyone that has symptoms. (I work in a shop so I have no idea if I've been around anyone). I've been told I'll be given the jab when I've given birth, before I leave hospital.

redastra · 15/05/2014 12:51

hi Alita!
Just wondering how you got on with your practice nurse??

alita7 · 15/05/2014 13:08

oops! forgot to try and ring her back after the line was engaged so long! After you said I wouldn't have to have it, the call back dropped in my priority list :p Must do that!

It is possible that she just wants to give general advice and/or explain the test results and why you cannot have the rubella shot during PG.

alita7 · 15/05/2014 13:44

that's what I was thinking, In which case the call can wait until I've sorted out the billion and other things I've got to do this week :p
