we want to start TTC very shortly and I am really worried about the whole pregnancy/painkiller issue. I have very bad back/neck pain and headaches due to whiplash a number of years ago. am doing Alexandra technique/osteopathy to try and cope but pain is too bad not to take painkillers aswell.
Also ordinary ibuprophen doesn't work anymore, have to take ibuprophen plus for it to have any effect.
What is the situation with pregnancy and painkillers? Please help, won't be able to get through nine months without them.

Ibuprofen is not recommended in pregnany. Is the 'plus' paracetamol? if so the paracetamol would be OK.

I would have a chat with your GP about this

Ordinary paracetamol doesn't work, but am going to try the "plus" version.
I the pain is bad enough to take them at least once a day if not more and am worried about heavy usage/impact ect. Is paracetamol ok even if taken regularly?
Am going to talk to GP but worried she won't be sympathetic to issue and will just say "don't take them"

Paracetamol is OK to use during PG, I don't know if there are issues with 'regular' use during PG.

Ibuprofen isn't approved for use in pg. In part this is because it can (in rare cases) case premature closing of part of the heart in the developing baby. This risk is very , very small. Your GP and you may decide that it is a risk worth taking if you are in great pain.

This really is something that you need to discuss with your GP so that you can both weigh up the risks and benefits of various treatment options

can gp not refer you to a specialist? i'm concerned you will get worse in pregnancy?
lots of women who were ok before get probs in pg. you need expert advice IMHO

sorry for typing baby on lap

Potential probelm with codein is that it can cause consipation, which can be enough of a probelm in late pg as it is.

Could you get your doctor to refer you to a pain clinic?

I used cododomal (?) while pregnant with dd. I was told NOT to use "plus" paracetamol.

Hello!

The pharmacist will be able to tell you what you can take. i was advised NOT to take the plus version of paracetamol. By the way - are you seeing a 'cranial' osteopath or a 'normal' one. You may need some cranial work done.....?

Am going to see a cranial osteopath.
Will see doctor to discuss, as I find the standard versions don't work these days. Good suggestion about talking to pharmacist as well, might give me some idea. Have been sent to specialist for my shoulder etc, but they just want to give stronger and stronger pills.
Interesting about the codine, as that is what makes the iburophen and paractamol "plus" and that certainly works
